PC vs Standalone Console

Still doing research while getting my old home studio back up after several moves.

With advances, what are your thoughts on PC w/good sound card as brain versus a standalone console such as roland VS series or yamaha unit with CD burner?

Also for doing home studio with keyboards, guitar, bass, vocals (perhaps two people recording at once at most) what are suggestions for sound cards with sufficient ins and outs and quality?

I have the Fostex VF16 recorder and a Terratec EWS88D card in my computer and this is truly a great combo for relatively low cash. Thru the ADAT inteface I can route 8 channel of audio between the machines in real time and besides using the Fostex as a standalone recorder for basic tracking I use it also as recording mixer when I overdub on computer. I have also the Fostex VM88 digital mixer that I use for 8 additional analog inputs for VF if I need to record more than 8 tracks simultaneously. I've yet to receive my new VF200 mixer that i bought off Ebay.de that will replace the VM88 and that I can hopefully use as a control surface to Cubase too. IHMO the Fostex has all the right features I need while the AW16G has all kinds of whistles and bells but lacks in some key features like being limited to just 8 tracks simultaneous recording or the absence of ADAT.
