In serious recordings, can good computer speakers replace studio monitors ?

In serious recordings, NO! But if you've got a silly song...

I'm not gonna say its impossible to get a good mix with upper end computer speakers, but you're handicapping yourself quite a bit. I listen to my mixes on both, and they are drastically different sounding. Don't use headphones for mixing either.

I'd have to say no. Simply because studio monitors are made to give "flat" frequency response, so the entire frequency range is reproduced accurately, whereas computer monitors usually have boosts in the bass and treble frequencies rendering them inappropriate for use in serious recordings.

Monitors are most peoples weakest link. I consider it like being drunk and see a hot babe in a bar, waking up the next morning and finding out she has been beaten with the ugly stick. What may sound good on them now may suck tommorow. Invest and you'll be very happy!

Monitors are definitely ONE of the most important parts of your setup.

Remember that consumer level speakers are made to make music sound good. You might not necessarily be hearing what you think you're hearing. In other words they are probably "lying" to you.

And once you purchase your reference monitors, you will be able to hear the difference.

peace... :)

Step Two

Ok thanks. Good thing I asked, I was thinking I could get the same thing cheaper since geting a computer and using it for digital recording was cheaper than geting a consumer digital recorder.

Step Two: What recomendations can you give me for the monitors?

Heezzi,
You really should try the search feature of this BBS. This question gets asked and answered over and over.

My recommendation: JBL LSR25Ps ~$500USD/pr.

Search for the word monitor. See what you dig up here...

Would you still recomend those monitors?

heezzi, how much do you have to spend on monitors?? you can get something like the samson resolv 65's which actually sound quite good, and seem to be nice and flat with a few peaks here and there for only 199... or you can step up and get Blue skys but they aren't cheap...

I use Alesis Monitors for mixing and have been quite happy with them, Got them on eBay for a great price too. :)
