Hi,
I just bought a Tascam 424mkIII and am curious how to get my recordings from the recorder to my PC.

Do I need a special soundcard (I have a Sound Blaster)?
Also, what sort of software do you folks recommend for "manipulating" stuff on my PC.

BTW, if you haven't already figured it out, I have absolutely NO recording experience.

Yes you will need a sound card. any sound card will do for mixing down to the computer but there are many cards that are better than others. But any sound card will do.

I presume you already use your PC for this type of stuff...
What software do you use or recommend??

Good software would be Cool Edit Pro or Sound Forge. I use Cool Edit Pro to mix down to myself, it works very well. If you're really not into a whole lot of actual editing on the computer, a decent WAV recorder (the one that comes with Sound Blasters, for example) will do. I myself dont really edit anything besides chopping the beginning and end off at the right points. There's a lite version of Sound Forge (Sound Forge XP?) that may be a good investment for you, unless you wanna spend loads on software (which you really shouldn't, since you dont have a fancy setup just yet). Grab that program and concentrate your money on mics and effects units and tube preamps and mic stands and Monster cables and compressors and limiters and noise gates.......!

Sorry for the long delay for the response. Ive been away. My personal favorite is Sound Forge. But there are many good ones depended on how much editing you want to do. Like i said, any sound card will work ok, especially if your only recording from a 4 Track. Creative Labs are not exactly the best for recording. The AWE64 sounds better than the Sblive in recording. But any card like that which goes inside the computer will have a pretty high static. Cards with break out boxes have much lower static.

Ideas!

If you mix down from your computer, what's the hookup?

How do you run from the Tascam into your computer?

Thanks,

Fita
