Hey guys.

I'm running a PC based unit with a 24/196 PCI card.

All I need to do is record vocals for pre-made soundtracks (for now). So I need to load in the soundtrack then record vocals while the track is playing. I want to be able to open multiple tracks in the same window and re-record sections of the vocals without losing the earlier vocal recordings. Then I should be able to pick and choose the best vocal pieces from the multiple tracks and combine them into one track over the soundtrack.

Ideally I should be able to play back one or more tracks of my choosing while simultaneously recording on a new track.

Sounds easy enough. :)
Thanks in advance.
Roger

I'm a big fan of Cubase. It does all and more of what your wanting and I believe Cubase SX handles 196. SX is in the Windows XP platform.

For what you're doing you really don't need Cubase SX. But it would the ideal thing to have :) Just remember you get what you pay for.

Cheap and easy to use: N-Track Studio ( www.fasoft.com ) $40-$60

For simple work you could even use some of the freebie sequencers:

Audacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net
QuartzAudioFree - http://digitalsoundplanet.com/SoftwareHouse/Products/Audio_Master/Freeware/freeware.phtml
A whole lotta audio software - http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/MULTITRACK_RECORDING/

If you go to Borders or Barnes&Noble or BooksAMillion you can also get "Computer Music" or "MusicTech" magazines.... they have whole suites of free audio software, demos and free audio samples to use with each issue.

I've always been a fan of Cakewalk's products. Home Studio would be fine.
