Hi all, can anyone recommend some interface or equipment that will allow me to record from my electric guitar (with a 1/4" plug) with decent quality? I read about M-Audio's Black Box but the quality sounds problematic. Also what programs are good for applying effects? I do have a sequencer (Cubase).

If the interface has balanced XLR input for a mic that would be nice since I could also record off the acoustic guitar. Thanks.

I went for a Fostex mr8hd, no regrets in a few years now.:)

costs some, but you got 8-tracks, 4 simultaniously. easy export to PC via usb.

Perfect for me, doubled rhythmguits a lead and a bass fit to 4 tracks.
Takes plugs or XLR feeds phantom if needed.

Look at the Line 6 stuff.
The PODXT's are nice but the TonePorts are more of a computer based interface with a ton of nice guitar tones, amp modeling as well as XLR in(s).
The TonePorts are much less expensive too.

I like the TonePort UX2 myself. I owned it for a short time but then opted for the POD XT. The UX2 has a ton of recording capabilities, Guitar and bass amp modeling, microphone preamp modeling AND 2 channels!

will any of these provide a latency low enough that I won't need a monitor for real time playback? I'm using the PC's built-in sound, its SPDIF output and ASIO4ALL. I can get a new interface with a proper ASIO driver while I'm at it, so if the interface has a 1/4" or XLR input that'd be even better.

the toneports that homestudioguy mentioned are supposed to have very low latency because of some hardware acceleration from the interface. the cheapest model is $70.

ok... I just got a TonePort UX2, but I can't get it to work. I installed the software and driver in Windows XP, and the software (GearBox) seems to recognize the guitar input. The audio level indicator goes up when I strum the guitar, but there's no sound at all on the PC.

Is anyone familiar with this? I wonder if a better sound card will make a difference since I'm using onboard sound.

Also I thought it included a VST plug-in but I can't find it as a VST. Looking at their website the "Plug-In" appears to be a separate $200 software!!?? As it is I don't know how this device can work with my sequencer -- I guess I'd have to record it separately as a wav, assuming I can even get it to work? [I found out that the VST is available as an effect, not an instrument. This is not related to the issue above]

update: this thing apparently needs to become the default sound device, and I needed to connect the speakers to it, then it started working. It doesn't pass AC3/DT3 streams but other than that it seems fine for now.
