If you like to dick around with computers - get a PC. If you wanna make music without dicking around with the computer - get a Mac.

Dan:

Did you write that in 1990? It sure sounds like it. I haven't heard anybody espouse ficticious and incendiary platform crap like that in a long time.

They buy Macs not because they lack the "screwdriver logic" to keep a PC running, rather they realize that their time is far better spent working with the music rather than making their Windows PC work properly.

The thing is, people who complain about XP being unstable are usually the same people that put the wrong combination of hardware in their PC. :D

OR...you don't have to worry about it with a mac.

I've made enough overtime money on sessions based on Macs to know that Macs require the same or even more nervousness on the part of the user when recording live musical talent.

Eh, I don't know, never used a Mac. Still, if you know what you're doing with a PC (or hire someone who does to build your computer) then you shouldn't have any problems. Anything beyond that point is a combination of severely bad luck or a lot of porn sites.

i beg to differ on the outperforming...
the numbers don't line up, ie, 2.0ghz g5 is not equal to a 2.0ghz say pentium IV or whatever.

2.0ghz g5 is more like the equivalent of a 3.0 P4.

cheaper, yes PC is cheaper... but you get what you pay for. i use a PC for this, web browsing, email etc.

no virus/spyware/tojan on a mac. and if you say you dont have anything on your PC, download a free copy of Lavasoft Ad Aware and run it. guarantee you find a ton of spyware (if the computer uses the internet). you'll find atleast 10 files/processes each week, minimum.

build a computer-top notch, P4/amd 64, with a 3.4ghz processor, 250gig HD, optical drives, etc. it will cost ATLEAST $1000, leaning higher to 1500, if you are using good amount of ram.

this computer here- DELL something, pentium4 2.8ghz, 7200rpm drive, 1 gig of ram, is like using my Ibook G4 1.42 ghz. ok so the ibook cost $1300 and this cost maybe $600, but i got a used Imac G5 for $1000 used and it kills this machine and every other i've used, including my boss's 3.2ghz p4 with 2gig ram, 2x160gig 7200 rpm drives that he uses for recording, and that computer cost him $1200, plus monitors ($450). my imac is built into the monitor hehe, and its widescreen!

but i've used PC for simple recording, using a little soundcard and Sonar 2, and that was ok.

PC or Mac- i guess neither is better. Its opinion, and eventually there will be no difference because there will only be one OS- Mac's with Intel CHips, Which i dont think i would buy, can support Windows OS now...

The future is bleak- it's all going to be the same one day. linux is going to take over the world!
Thanx 4 that...I like the '2-system' idea...one for surfing, one for recording ONLY. I'd guess a mac would surf better (less lurg susceptibilty) & then have a P4 to record.
I was recently given an old G3 PowerBook, OS 9.1, so considering loading OS10 into that (if there's enough mem) then putting a 'custom' PC together from Gamedude to record w/.

I want to ascertain wether this ol' mac will handle/take OS 10. Then I wanna use it to surf the web.
Specs: IMac Power PC G3 350Mhz
OS 9.1,
disk cache 8160k
virtual mem 321 MB
built-in 256 MB (vid mem 8MB, backside-cache 512k )

Hehe yea it is. Both platforms have perks and problems. I love my Mac because not enough people have them yet for a ton of viruses to exist. The interface is nice and pretty, and for the most part, easy to use. When I want to get on a network, I have much less of a problem than I do with a PC. On the other hand, for all the power in my graphics card and the amount of memory I have, Flash video still plays slugglishly, even on my G4 powerBook, 1.5Ghz PPC w/ 1GB of RAM.

Audio recording has always worked fine on my G4 and on my Pentium 4.

Its gonna be a while before I upgrade, but its gonna be a Mac, simply because I'd rather spend the money to get a machine that is well put-together using quality parts, and has a good, stable OS. Its just one of those areas where cost-cutting by buying a cheap motherboard or a graphics card with an ATI chipset on another manufacturer's board is going to get ya. It always has for me - every part I ever skimped on in my PC has failed before I wanted to upgrade. On the other hand, my Intel brand motherboard has lasted 5 years and is still going strong :D

PC for speed, Mac for productivity. It's all about what's more important to you.

In what ways do you consider the PC "faster"? Just curious - not looking for a fight - I know not to start em in these threads where no one has any more evidence than what they've experienced (hence why I say I'll buy a Mac simply because I've had better luck with the hardware - its luck is all).

Well, when the PC is caked in viruses (like mine) that's not the case ;)

I find that PCs tend to process (assuming both have the same specs, and have nothing wrong with them) information a little faster. There's really nothing I can back up the statement with, it's just my experience. My guess would be macs superior GUI slows it down a bit ;)

I'm a Mac person myself, and I hate PCs.

i have recorded on both a mac and a pc and they're both adequate depending on your specs. but there is one thing that really pisses me off about macs. MACS DO NOT COME WITH IMAGE EDITING SOFTWARE!!! how can you base your sales on the fact that macs are great with pictures and audio when you can't even work with pictures "right out of the box." i would actually pay money for a version of ms paint that works on a mac. i love mspaint!

another thing for me, personally because i have one of the first models of the powerbook G4 (which also came with a re-called battery ugh), there is an OS glitch where for no reason at all the computer will randomly decide to offset the balance of the speakers. sometimes it will suddenly only come out of one speaker. how the fuck do you expect me to be a competent recording engineer on a platform that auto-aligns your audio balance??? many many many times i have been working on something and it sounded like it was panned too far to the left, but it was just the computer deciding to be a douchebag. some people i know went out and bought completely new speakers because you wouldn't think this kind of ridiculous thing would happen. i took it to the tech guys and they say there's nothing they can do about it.

I prefer PC simply because it's what I know.

I find Macs look like something from another planet. Very alien to me... :)

you sure the metal contacts in the input jack aren't just fucked up?

don't the new macs come with "i-life" with a photo editor, garage band and all that jazz.. they're not going to give you photoshop for free sorry..

They weren't markerting themselves as heavily as they are now when you got your computer.. I had that laptop too (with the battery problem).. your panning problem isn't something i came across at all.. there is something wrong with either your jack or another piece of hardware somewhere.. bring it in to get serviced.. I've used macs for years.. and have never heard of this problem.. so i think it's something hardware not software.

on that note i still use my pc for recording.. simply because the mac i have at home isn't up to snuff.. and I'm having a real hard time ditching adobe audition.. figures that i love the ONLY god damn adobe program not available on a mac.

Actually, now Apple's offering the whole CS3 package for something like $300 bucks when you buy a new computer. iLife has iPhoto, which does simple stuff like adjusting contrast and saturation. He means stuff like paint, though. There are a few free programs on the web that are similar to paint.

I use a imac G5 and have used PC's in the past. The thing about Macs is they are mostly stable and getting cheaper but PC's have huge amounts of software available. Macs don't have alot of software options. I finally found some good and reasonably priced software called Soundtrack Pro for recording and it works sweet.
