PC Mixdown Problem

This is the problem.

I bought the VS840GX mainly as a rehearsal/ experimentation tool and as a mean of keeping records of the songs I play. I have been recording with my dynamic PA mikes and simply mixing down in stereo to a small walkman style tape recorder and getting good enough results and good volume.

I have just started trying to mix down my songs to my PC as I feel it will be a lot easier to keep track of my songs and to do copies with a CD.

I'm just using cables out of the the 840's "master out" to a stereo mini jack into the sound card of the PC (same as I use for the tape) and using Cool-edit. What I am getting is static and some jumping and speed variation. I have traced this (I think) to the actual mix down recording from the VS. I have played some with levels and such and have not fixed the problem.

I kinda feel the problem is my shitty sound blaster copy soundcard, and have been looking at getting hold of an Audiophile 2496, both as the best solution and for use possibly if I get more serious and want to make a real CD (better mikes etc)

Any ideas?

Does the 840 have digital in's and out's on the back of it? If so then get yourself an M-Audio Dio2448 digital soundcard and a couple of SPDIF cables. This will allow you to go out of your Roland and into your PC and vice-versa. Then you will be able to do a stereo mixdown to Cool Edit, Soundforge or whatever program you use but you'll be bringing your signal in digitally instead of through the audio in's and out's. Hope this helps!

Yes thanks..

I just yesterday bought an Audiophile 2456. Put it in along side my current sound card connected to the GX with a coax cable and tried it and it works great!

I'm also using Cooledit pro. Haven't gotten into the fancy stuff yet going back and forth to the GX and I probably won't. I'm recording acoustic music so there are virtually no effects and only 5 -6 tracks.

Excellent. I like mixing down to the PC better than using the mastering tool kits in the Roland. Have fun!
