Paying Copyright

I play in resturants and bars and wine bars.

I mainly do cover songs .

I am thinkinhg of making a CD of a few covers but I want top pay the copyright .

Is there a Legit way of doing this ?i.e get a licence and permission and do you know if it works out very expensive . I mean say I had lets say 12-14 songs i.e covers of Elton John, Stevie wonder , The Eagles, David Gates and Bread etc etc.?

I don't have a lot of knowledge about this, but check the Harry Fox Agency (www.harryfox.com).

That's a good starting place. Maybe someone with more knowledge about this can chime in...
 
Copyright is just a term to say it's their property, royalties is what you'll be paying.

Most wont care if you record their songs, they actually welcome it. They want to collect on the publishing. You'll have to pay them for each CD sold, radio stations will have to pay when the cover is played on the air. It's money in their pocket and you did all the work. It's when you don't pay they get pissed off.
