I've just decided to invest in a patchbay in hopes that it would make life easier. So far it just ain't gettin' any easier. I've purchased the Behringer px2000 with the four patchbay configurations....Parallel, half-normalled, normalled, open. This has to be the most uncomprehensible manual I've ever had the misfortune to trdge through or I am truly ignorant!

I have a Yamaha MD-8 digital 8 track recorder.
An Alesis Midi Verb 4
Digitech Vocalist
Boss VF-1
Teac CD Burner
Sony Double Cassette Deck
Teac EQ
Yamaha PA for monitors.
Sony CD Player

How does a person interconnect any of these to make us of a patchbay?

1. How do I get my EQ patched to operate all of my CD players, double cassette recorder and my 8 track?

2. How do I get my effects...Midiverb, Vocalist, VF-1 Guitar processor and my compressor interconnected?

3. How do I get my 8 track to work off of these items listed above?

I know this is alot of information, if you can direct me to a website which offers remedial help that would be great...if you can answer any of the above question..I'll buy you lunch! Thanks....Ray (lost in the briar patch!)

i've got the same patchbays.

stick em all in open position.

the best thing to do is connect any of your MD8 analog inso to the patch bay. this way, you wont wreck the inputs at any time. all you do is connect a cable from one jack on the MD8 to a connection on the patch bay. to send anything to that MD8 port, you just input something on the other end. to connect your midiverb into the patchbay, connect a lead to the input, and one to the output. stick this anywhere you like in the patchbay (under each other is best.). make sure you have some of your MD8's outputs on the patch bay. then to use the midiverb on the vocals, you just have to chuck a patchcord FROM the vocal output jack, to the MIDIverb IN jack. i dont know if your output will be going back into the mixer or what.

patchbays are a little awful when you first get them. they make more sense after a while. i mainly bought patchbays for inputs. i have mackie D8B's which means 104 inputs. i have those all on patch bay. now it's easy.

We've just had a long thread on this topic over in the Studio Building and Display forum:

Count me as one who prefers half-normalling, and setting up the patchbay so that no cables are needed to establish your basic functionality: my bays are set up so that when all patches are pulled out of the frint side, I'm normalled up for tracking. Anyway, hope this helps...

Once you learn how to use a patchbay it's like becoming a genius. All of a sudden you get focused, life becomes much easier and you don't give a fuck about anything else.

Good god WHY???? Any effect units mounted to PBs are typically connected OPEN (de-normalled), 'cos they don't like having their IN/OUTs coupled together when not in use!

But more common is half-normalled... why force usage of jumpers just to maintain typical signal flow????

There is a de facto standard PB setup that is used in many studios...

PB1 - TOP Assigned channel inputs
PB1 - BOT Console channel inputs (half-normalled to top)

PB2 - TOP Console Inserts (send)
PB2 - BOT Console Inserts (return) (half-normalled to top)

PB3 - TOP Console BUSS outputs
PB3 - BOT Multitrack Inputs (half-normalled to top)

PB4 - TOP Multitrack Outputs
PB4 - BOT Console Multitrack returns (half-normalled to top)

PB5 - TOP Console Direct Outputs (de-normalled)
PB5 - BOT Console miscellaneous (de-normalled)

ive never been good with patchbays. i keep everything open, then i just know where everything is. thats somehing ive never been so good on.

i know that 2 of the producers here use all wierd half normaled and all that. i just dont think i was made for patchbays.

i forgot to mention bruce, there's a lot of studios down this end of the sea that use open. i really oughta learn the whole patchbay thing properly. i only really use them for sorting out ins/outs of the console. i dont know how the effects patchbays are setup cus i didn't have anythign to do with it:-)
