patchbay?

Hey,
I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this question, but I am wondering exactly what a patchbay is. If someone could just give a simple explanantion that would be great.

It's a device that allows a common point to connect all your analog (or digital - if it's a digital patchbay) signal I/O, allowing you to easily route signals from one place to another without reaching behind racks/console/mixers/recorders/etc.........
