Heya...Just wondering...What brand ptchbays don't require soldering, that is, sockets on front and back?...Are there any in the loq budget area that arn't too bad? Any websites for them and most importantly is there any advantage/disadvantage to this type vs the soldering type....Cheers!...

I've never heard of solderless PBs... are you thinking of PBs with punchblocks?

What are punchblocks?...No, I'm sure I saw a patchbay somewhere with 1/4in sockets at the front (like alot do) and the same at the back...

Well, are you looking for balanced or unbalanced?

Behringers aren't bad, but unbalanced. Only minor gripe is that you have to unscrew them from the rack to change the normalization.

HOSA got one semi-balanced that looks really nice. Haven't tried it though. It's called PHB-265.

They also got a balanced PHB-350 that requires card flipping to normalize.

Samson has a balanced one with front-panel switching, but I can't find confirmation that it has line jacks on the back too.

Don't even waste your money on anything other than Furman's if you are looking for 1/4" patchbays. I have NEVER had a problem with Furmans, and have never heard of anybody having problems with one after years of use. I have however had problems with dbx, Nuetrix, Behringers, and a few others I can't think of off the top of my head.

Truely, Furmans while more expensive and the KINGS of the 1/4" patchbay market, and investing in one is investing in something that will work 5 years from now.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

Aha!

"The PB-48's front panel can be easily removed, even when the unit is already mounted in a rack. The unit may be customized by removing the front panel, pulling out any module to be non-normalled, turning it end-for-end, and replacing it."

OK, fine. No need for switches (although they admittedly are sweet) you can change the normalization withut unracking it.
You'll have to unplug all cords, though. ;)

You can also get PBs with Dsub or Elco multipin connectors so you don't have to solder. You just use a breakout cable with multipin on one side and multiple TRS or XLR jacks on the other end.

I've had good luck with the Re'an's. I had one of the Behringers & oh what a pos it was. I think I posted this a few months back. The cables would fall out the back if you tipped the bay. Incredible. I'd do the Furman or the Re'an thing.

OK...

From $'s I've been able to find vs my budget vs the intention (which is something JUST to get me through umtill I've alittle more $$ to spend) the HOSA PHB-350 looks like the go at just alittle over the price of the Behringers, but ballanced and 1/4 sockets on both sides....
Anyone used these...Good points? Bad points?...

ADC makes some (very expensive) ones. I have a 1/4" balanced 48 point which takes pins. You will have to crimp pins on the terminals though. Or like Tex said, you can get some TASCAM Dsub bays (which I can sell you) and some Dsub housings and harnesses (which I can also sell you) and make custom plugs for them. They are 64 point, tt and balanced.

Email me if you're interested.

How do ya like yours Tex?

Neutrick also makes a 48 pt TRS balanced PB.

I picked one up at GC for $99 with a price match from a web vendor.

I also have a Furman 40 pt TS non-balanced PB that has never given me any problems in 5 or six years of use.

So far so good. The PB jacks are nice and tight. My only concern is those DSUB-DSUB cables. The enclosure on the DSUBs is so big that they just barely fit when two of them are plugged in side by side. It actually puts some strain on the PB DSUB jacks. They seem to keep a good connection though so no worries.

Yeah, I don't know why TASCAM had to start making them so big. They barely fit their own bays, weird. But like you said they do work so I don't think it will be a real issue.

Glad things are good for you.
