Yeah, that's the whole idea. Instead of having to connect and disconnect cables as needed and pulling them all over the studio, getting the universe worst cable spaghetti as a result, you connect up EVERYTHING to the back-end of patchbays.

Then you connect everything by patch cables in the patchbay instead. Much neater, faster and simpler.

You also have the possibility of making default connections called "normalizing" so that you can have the studio set up as you mostly want it by default, and still be able to reconnect everything at your whim.

What regebro said. For example, I have aux sends 1-4 of my Mackie 1604 normalled to the returns on my snake. (I use that to send headphone mixes from the control room to the studio.)

ok if i understand this correctly. say i have my bbe sonic maximizer and i want it to be used on vocals drums and bass, then i can take 3 outputs into 3 different inputs on my mixer?

If the BBE sonic maximizer has 3 outputs yes.

Most patchbays can be used to split signals, but other than that they do NOT give you ANY extra functionality. It just gives you a central place to do the patching, as opposed to groping behind equipment to look for the output hole and having long cables criss-crossing the room.
