Partitioning Tutorial - Was it here?

I had to reformat so I get to set everything up again. I remember a really good tutorial on patitioning with 98Lite, but I'm not sure this is where I saw it. I have PowerQuest and 98Lite but the author said PowerQuest was too clumsey. Any suggestions on a good Partitioning Tutorial?

I got up to the "system transferred" entry on the floppy, but after I typed (it said "copy") c:\win...format.com a:, it kept wanting to reformat the floppy and I could not type or copy the othe files: fdisk, edit or sys. Were you able toget all this on one floppy?I lost all my files and I can't send an email to you yet. The link needs updated Off 97.

It shouldn't want to reformat. You are using a blank floppy to begin with?

Copy the files from windows explorer than instead of the DOS prompt. These files should copy to the floppy no problem.

from the DOS prompt

copy c:\windows\command\format.com a:

It will all fit on one floppy with plenty of space to spare.

What is the exact error message that it gives you.

Perhaps an article I wrote on using a single partition but with dual boot would be the ticket. Check it out at Collaboration Central, click forums, then the lower left link called Using 98 lite. This details setting up a system with two or more OS's that share the same boot sector info. Give it a looksee and let me know if it is the kind of thing you are looking for. It also details a boot floppy creation. I don't use the utilities that Emeric_2 uses as I use standard windows commands. But either should work for you.

I just brought my computer back to life. It's always a mystery getting my modem installed.
Your tutorial was excellent. What we were reading(my wife was reading) was actually coming up on the screen. A few little spots we had to think a little.You might say to go to Windows Explorer and copy the following files: format etc. I'm so stupid, I started typing the entries you made in the DOS window instead of following the trail.

DS Sultan - thanks for responding. I followed Emeric's tutorial and it worked great. I guess I won't be using Powerquest and BootMagic anymore.

Follow ALL the instructions

To any potential Partionist,
Emeric suggested disconnecting any dedicated audio harddrives before partitioning the OS harddrive. I diconnected my second hd, but the computer wouldn't boot. So, I plugged it back in and went through the tutorial with both hds connected. As I was reinstalling software, I noticed that there was no sign of my second hd.
I think what I should have done, or what I probably will have to do, is to only connect one harddrive and install Win 98 on it and then go through the tutorial again. I'm waiting on Emeric's suggestion.

If there isn't any important data on the disk, do the following:

Boot with the bootdisk.

Run efdisk

Do not alter the settings for your boot drive.

Depending how you partitioned your boot drive, if it's 50/50 you should see those two listed with the cylinder info you entered.

Do you see parameters for your second drive in there? If it's one partition it should start at 0000 and end at 1023 or something larger.

If it is listed, don't change anything. Hit F10 save settings and see if that works.

Also, check that your BIOS settings were not altered. In standard CMOS setup, set them all to AUTO.

Yes, it was in efdisk and it was hidden. I remembered to highlight it and type "H", then is was no longer hidden. You are a great computer teacher. Thanks, Thanks.

For anyone else reading this,
Forget 98Lite "sleek Win95" install(2GB max Partitions), forget Powerquest "Partition Magic", Emerics tutorial is so much less complicated and streamlined, that there is no comparison. Plus, you'll learn things about your computer that you didn't know. He doesn't leave you hanging, he goes step by step and what you read on his printed tutorial is what you'll see on the screen. If only audio software writers could be this explecit.

Also, you'll be amazed at all the troubles that go away once you separate your audio programs from the family computer activities. I named one Partition "Internet, and the other "Audio".
