WOW...

This is great, Kenny! I never in my life could've heard all of that on this song! Waaay cool... bassline is awesome... synth... beautiful, man. You made this sound good :) Cool as hell! I'm pinching myself...

:D <-- this grin isn't gonna leave my face for days :D

You are one talented guy there, Tokes.

Now, I gotta actually do a good vocal take for ya :D Lemme know if you'd like anything... anything at all... a liver donor, maybe? ;)

Nice job Toki - Excellent choice of bass tones...and I do realize it was a choice, btw, b/c I've heard you achieve a very different one. This is not too bright or "jazzy" for the song. It's perfect, and that's classy.

Yup, this is shaping up nicely.

Toki,
That is the first collaboration I've heard on this board. I think you guys are onto something here. I dunno....maybe others are doing it as well, I just haven't heard any. BTW, is that your site on NWR? I listened to the other cuts while I was there....good stuff! I'll bet you don't have very many Jeff Becks in your music collection do ya? One of these days, I think I would like to work up a guitar part to one of your tunes (just for my own little jam). I love that kind of music. It just made me think of the times in the way distant past that I used to sit with my guitar (and bong) and try to follow Jeff Beck. He is absolutely one of my favorite guitarists.

I appreciate you lettin me fool around with it. When I first heard your post I got into those changes on the guitar. Reminded me of some joni mitchell type stuff kinda. Maybe we can do some more. I wanted to put a real b3 at the end with the horns spinning and distorting but I gotta buy that B4 DXI thing. I`m glad you like it. :)

Thank you dude.Glad you liked it. It pretty much a simple adjustment. I turned the bridge pickup almost off so it would be a little more precision bass sound, and added a little eq.
Thank you Chris! :)

I`ve never done the collab' thing online before. I just been playing along with some of the tunes as I listened and figured it shouldnt be that hard to do. Chad has been relaly nice about reflecting my fucking up on some of my posts, so I thought I`d fuck one of his up too!!! hahaha. I just wish I had a little more expertise at mixing, but I`m working on it.
Les see.. Jeff Beck, hehe.... I got all of his albums.. :)
I was listening to "Goin down" a week or so ago. An alltime favorite. :)

Tok-ey,

If you want to do this as a for-reals collab thing... lemme send you a good vocal cut, for one (I'm sittin here cringing at my scratch vocal there...)

And those spoken words... I'd like to change them to something more "breathy"... w/echoes, etc.

I'll PM ya first thing tomorrow if you still want anything to do with this...

Funny, I didn't hear any fuck ups....I think you both did a great job. The collaboration thing has a lot of appeal to me, especially after hearing the results. I'm still working on my backlog for the copyright office, but my recording skills are getting better with each tune I do. Perhaps someday I'll be ready for a collab.

Oh yeah, this is sounding kool over here! Bass tone and playing was really good Ken. This is sounding great guys! Are you going to add more stuff or is this a take? Sounds great as is though, good work!

yeah!

I knew this song was screaming for a full band, and it's sounding great.. It makes me appreciate the vocals a lot more.. sweet bass! I'd love to hear what the real collaboration will sound like.. great matchup guys! It's on the 5th listen! this tune makes me feel good! :D great song Chad!

continue..

sounds great............good bass, on a good song...............the bass has a little too much punch at a couple points where a touch of compression could tame it a little.......for example, around the 1:00 to 1:10 section the bass almost starts to compete with the vocal level........this is actually probably the only spot where that happens much..........not much to worry about...........great playing

great bass playing and tone, TOKI.....I know where to go to now for my bass tracks:D

very good guys......

sooner or later, HR.COM should release a Collaborations CD.......

yeah agreed....bass is perfect for the song.....man this is coming along nicely chad..."how bad could the bullet be"....i love that (i thinki said already)..lol...at 2:40 ish where its just guiutar that is a great tensive sound ...very cool. so are you goin to redo the vocals??..did you say that???....
nice work gentlemen.

Not sure what collab methods were used so bear that in mind please...

Ya very cool...drums sound very nice. The vocal sibilance is a little distracting. I don't remember hearing that in the first version I heard. I don't know how much of the original vocal signal has been cut out, but it sounds like some low-mids need to be re-introduced, and maybe the 4500 area needs to be checked for strong peaks....and the guitar sounds a little essey to me too actually. Bass sounds great. Take this from someone who's still learning drums, but the cymbals might be a bit busy.

Over, bottem sounds good to me, but the high end seems to stray for my ears.

As for the music, nice job to the both of you! I liked the first version, and this adds a lot.

Toki should probably answer that... but I haven't sent him any wav files (yet)... all he had to work with was the mp3... still have to send the PM to iron some things out.

Just love your additions, Kenny. I was thinking more along the lines of cellos & possibly some fingerpicked solos-- but your way kicks butt!

--

[EDIT] Ok... I'm gonna leave some actual feedback...

Just a note--Toki did wonderfully with his additions, being that he just used my mp3 w vox, drums, and guitar. We'll have to actually "collab" on this, and mix the tracks from scratch...

NOTES:

In the choruses, the tom-toms are fighting the bass (we'll have to work that out in any "mix" we do)

In the outro, the final "movement" (or change) is to E, and there's a bass stumble there -- but I'm sure that's easily fixed. (Around 3:36-3:38)

The guitar's "buzziness" is accentuated a bit.

The vocals SUCK! What constipated bus-stop hobo barfed out those? Heh... seriously... I definitely sing better than that. For one, I had a bad nasal congestion (you can hear that on the "N" words "NOThing means everythiNG to me...") For another, I forced many notes... "Say goodbye to the stranger MAAAN"... Out of tune-ness "Worthless wounds won't HEAAL".

You gotta let me cut a good vocal. :D

I like your additions on drums... but they don't sound like they're from the same kit--or in the same acoustic space... we'd just have to mix them in better... (not possible just using an mp3).

I'd also like a shot at a better guitar take... I think that was the second take I did... and there's too much fret buzz, and a couple stumbles (as mixmkr said in the original thread)

The cavernous reverb used -- matter of taste -- but it's growing on me, I guess :)

----

Thanks, Toke :D Your talent makes a lesser talent sound good ;)

Still flattered

Hey Fellas,
Im sufferin' from an ass kicker of a cold here.... so im gonna keep this short so i can get back to bed.:) I just "had" to give this a listen to see where toki took it. I really dig it man. I still hear a real strong Smith's influence in this. Toki stuck w/ that , and that's a good thing. Nice B. tone and line man...... Im understanding you guys are gonna take this to finished product. Its definitely worthy. I cant wait to hear......

Nice work fellas........

.....nighty night ..........sniff:(

Sweet bass work. Overall mix is good, and I like the high sound on the guitars.

Participant's vocs don't suck any worse than mine - of course, mine REALLY suck. I try to make friends with singers so I can minimize the damage I do with the turd that is my voice...

Oh sorry - this is supposed to be about you guys. Nice song, again. Collabs are a blast, aren't they? Anyone here ever use Rocket Network?

Thanks for listening folks. It was fun doing something with somebody with somebody else involved for a change. I think I got one of those kick ass colds Guernica has too, so I feel a little off and on. I`ll try to address the issues anyways for yall.
We really didnt schedule a collab, I just asked Chad if he minded me downloading it and messin with it. It was the mp3 i downloaded. First thing was working out the chords and the feel. There were a couple of places while the toms were playing I had to guess a little and just bounce off a couple of notes I knew were in the scale. I used a tad of reverb hoping to smooth the voice a little, I always get too much! This room is not treated, and is very much alive so I dont hear the verb well enough and also causes me some headaches in the high mids and above. I`ll have that fixed in a few days. The vocal sibilance and guitar ring is from me boosting the highs so I get a little more definition on the guitar, while tracked my part.
I didnt use the Levelar on the bass and should have, it does lean out there a little on the 2nd verse. The xtra drums are just scratch parts I put in to see what the impact would be. I was wanting to hear how some cymbals/crash would sound. Didnt spend a lot of time trying to match the kits. Chad could probably mix this really good and correctly. And sure, I'd enjoy doing a more serious shot at this. We`ll get together Chad, send me a pm.
Chad did a highly remarkable job of lyrics and organization on this tune, thats what struck my fancy! :)
