I'm looking to totally change my studio (a tascam digital mixer and pci-822), and I was very close to buying a motu 1224 ($600) on ebay or clearance at soem music stores), cubase sx (~$550), and houston (~$1100). I never really considered paris, because I thought it was very expensive. Well, while researching soem goos deals on houston and cubase, I found paris pro bundle for ~$1850. This doesn't have the 8 inputs that the motu has, it has 4, but it does have upgrades (right now I only need 4 anyway). It is a helluva lot cheaper than getting the setup I was about to choose. Is it worth the extra $$$ to go for the motu, cubase system or the paris one?

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Spend that cash on a trip to France instead, methinks...

Do they still make Paris, or are you thinking of buying somebody's "leftovers?" I thought the Paris project went under (issues w/money, chipsets or something, etc). I was checking into that system some time ago, and that was (if I remember correctly), a major reason I didn't wanna mess with it. Sounded pretty phat, though.

Maybe you should check around and let that make your decision for you. I mean, it'd suck shit if you couldn't get service due to parts and stuff being history. I think the running joke was to buy some extra chassis and stuff, in case you had problems with your main unit - at the price, you couldn't beat it, due to necessity, you had no choice...

That being said, I'd go for the Cubase/Motu setup hands down.

Maybe I'm wrong tho', my short term and my long term have long ago retired.

Hope this helps. Good luck

get the paris system.

I have seen it go for as low as $1450 on ebay with the box, controller and pci card. It guarantees 128 tracks out of the box and sounds good.

It does not do midi however.

You can add another 8 channels of I/O for real cheap and keep adding.

Just wondering...

C-Jaguar,

why invest in a system that isn't manufactured and can't really be supported anymore. I think the current prices are OUTSATNDING, as they have been for the last manymany months, but the reason is because they've got to be unloaded. I'd have a different mentality if they were still in production, but they aren't. HD recording systems are nothing like a cool amp or mic pre or other goodie like that. In 2 years, if ANYTHING happens to your Paris box, the owner is straight screwed.

I know a guy who makes a really decent living recording with his Paris system, expanded to the gills, etc., and even he's bought "extra" stuff "just in case" something, anything, goes kablooey.

I know it's the shizzy for the price, but it still seems to me to be grade A risky all things considered.

Like I said, just wondering...
