has anyone looked into this system much?

i was trying to figure out how much it would cost to get going on it....more expensive than i thought.

At first i was thinking it was like a "poor mans" pro tools...but, it looks like for 4 inputs/outputs, the little control deck, and the pci card...you'd already be at around 4 grand or so...

maybe I am reading it all wrong.

How does it compare to pro tools?
 
It can compete with PT very nicly but the main problem is that its a discontinued system.
 
If I was going for a system that serious I would just bite the bullet for a Pro Tools|24 Mix system which I think starts at 6 grand for the core card(still need interface :()according to their website.

I think it would be worth the price just to ensure that your product's company will still support it and you'll be able to easily find peripherals(it deffinately looks as if Digidisign will be around for QUITE a while, unlike EMU which has already axed Paris).
 
the system now cost $1999 new and goes for around $1450 on ebay
 
yeah...thats what I couldn't figure out...

for 1999 what exactly do you get?

the 16 control mixing board thing, 1 PCI card...they just arn't that specific...

how much I/O do you get for the 2,000?
 
For $1900 you get the c16 control interface, eds card, 3.0 software, and MEC interface. The mec comes with 4 in and out as well as a large number of slots for expansion. There are 8 in and 8 out modules that sell for about $300 used. The built in I/O on the MEC is 20bit and the modules are 24 bit. Although the system has been discontinued there is still a number of developments in the works. Chuck Duffy who runs the paris forum is working on having XP/2000 drivers written and he is also porting effects from a number of ensoniq outboard effects. Although the hardware has been discontinued, the company that wrote the software claims that they are still developing further versions. Chuck has also stated that profits from the software development will be funneled into further hardware development, I assume more modules for the MEC.
Paris is said to sound much better then Pro Tools. The software is well written and looks great. There is actually a demo that you can download that will let you play with it's functionality but you won't get audio. The 3 biggest downsides to paris are probably that you can't record more then 16 active audio tracks at a time.
These have to be mixed down to a submix before you can move to another 16. Also the midi implementation is rudimentry and almost worthless. You also can't use directx plugs while recording.
The upside is that it's a turnkey system designed to all work together seemlessly. There is almost no latency, I think heard that it was around 1.5 ms. The effects sound great. The mixes are big and fat. I use to have the delta 1010 and had a hard time recording my drums. while they didn't sound bad they never sounded big or powerfull either. With the same mics and everything setup the same, I recorded on Paris and the mix sounded huge, big and deep.

hmmm....interesting.

it's actually seeming pretty tempting....

I am not *really* looking for something new, but...I am just not satisfied with my Aardvark.

Have to see what develops with the "new developments" and such.

As far as sounding better than pro tools....I have my doubts as to how it could sound better than Pro Tools HD.

Yeah,Paris eehh. No VST or direct X. midi, Avid omf,.aif on 3.0-non-existent. And hey nothing sounds better than Pro tools.... especially w/o Apogee a/d, cha-ching, cha-ching! There is ABSOLUTELY no way you can get thru-puts that allow more than 16 real time tracks w/o a submix in Paris. Nope. And those 6 chips on the eds 1000...junk.

Anyone looking to UNLOAD some 24/48 Paris hardware crap please contact, it works well for traction in winter-time snow and ice especially with my c 12 and UA 2-610. ........ man I hope this thing boots......... I like the older black units please. Nice contrast with the white snow, you know.

Why are you not satisfied with your Aardvark? I thought I had read other posts from you where you were praising it. What happened? I am back from vacation and getting ready to place the order for all the components for my new recording PC and am planning on using the Q10 so your comments would be greatly appreciated...

All I know is that just about every time I've done a double-take on how professional a home recording sounded, it was usually done on a Paris. Macle does all his stuff on a Paris (for those who aren't familiar, pay a visit to the mp3 clinic sometime and do a search for his stuff), and probably my best-sounding tune was done on a Paris as well. It may just be a coincidence, though, so you can take it for what it's worth.

that you have to stop the transport before you can turn on an EQ
or an aux send or before you can load a plug-in.I love working in
Paris where all EQ's and sends and verbs are always there,always ready to go.This saves so much time and headaches when mixing. I even load native plug ins on the fly. I find it easier to keep rolling when mixing,it helps keep me focused.On the other hand stopping the transport to perform almost any little task is a royal pain in the ass and makes mixing in PT a hassle. ITs not the paris sound that amazes me.

I am just amazed at how much one gets for little money. The system used to cost $4000 and people bought it, and now, it suddenly goes down to $2000 and people are selling theirs for $1500.

Its a heck of a deal

I'm sorry I guess my wisa-ass scarasm did not thruput properly. Just for edification........ I'll stay in 24/48 PARIS!! I'm an avid PARIS user........pun intended, and seriously I am looking for ANOTHER 16 channels......BLACK C 16, MEC, EDS 1000. And hey, CyanJ may not be crazy about the PARIS sound but I still know people that swear the vlz pro pre's are every bit as good as a high end mp-2nv, 2-610 or Buzz etc. We all have 'em folks, it makes life interesting................ I like Halle Berry's and Nicole Kidman's the best tho...................opinion's of course, it's opinions I'm talkin' about hear, err ah.... here.
