Functionally obsessed.
I got a TEAC X-10R from my co-worker, who got it from her father. This machine hasn't run in years, but she didn't know about this, and she likely won't be able to answer any other questions about the deck.
So, that said: I took it home and plugged it in and pressed play - no action. It seemed like the transmission (my term - whatever the device is that engages the forward or reverse play) was working because I heard it go clunk-clunk inside the machine. The indicator LEDs on the front panel also flashed. I took off the cover and saw the belt was bad. So, I ordered a new belt and a service manual from TEAC, which arrived yesterday.
I replaced the belt and reconnected all of the PCB connectors, sewed everything back together and tried again. This time, the only action was the brakes disengaging. No clunk-clunk. No LEDs.
I'm a bit concerned that I either reconnected the controls incorrectly or that I somehow harmed the machine while trying to 'fix' it. OR, it could be something else entirely. It seems unlikely to me that I reconnected things incorrectly because it seems quite clear how everything should be reconnected: the plastic connector tabs are either color-coded or they appear to fit only on specific mounts on the PCB (due to either their pin count or the length of the cable).
I did notice, however, that the mechanism which engages the pinch rollers seems to be stiff and that I had to force them by hand to press against the capstans. I wonder if this might have something to do with it. This doesn't explain to me why I didn't hear the clunk-clunk of the forward-reverse play control mechanism, though, or why the LEDs didn't light up as they did before.
I'm kind of stuck here. I could reconnect everything again but I seem to be going nowhere on that route. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what might have caused this problem, or what I might try to resolve it?
I'll really appreciate anyone's help. I really want this machine to live again!
Thanks!!
Quick edit: I engaged both of the tension arms while attempting the transport controls.
