Oh yeah, the augmented 4th was once considered, "the devils tone", or something like that. It doesn't sound that good by itself. It works great in context.

Amusingly enough, the intro to "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix uses augmented 4ths.

So do some ambulances in European countries. Sure gets the attention of the ear! :D

i agree with everyone.

whats a parallel 5th and 8th tho? can anyone give me an example that i can play on my guitar and let you know if i like it?
by the way, i love this chord:
6th string - open
5th string - 1st finger at 7th fret.
4th string - 3rd finger at 9th fret,
3rd string - little finger at 9th fret
2nd and 1st open

how cool is that?! on a serious not, that chord and the same shape down at 2nd fret really is a good one to write around

brummy... that's e5, and B5add11/E i think.

parallel 5ths and 8ths (a.k.a. octaves) happen -basically- when you move from one chord with a 5th (or octave) in it to another chord with a 5th (or octave) in it, and then to another etc. So, on a guitar, if you're keeping the same in the left hand shape and just moving up and down the neck, you're moving in parallel. see? =) as the above forum says, it's non-essential knowledge.
