i was listening some killswitch engage songs and i notice they pan the cymbals differnt on each part of the song like the verse and chorus..and some cymbals are gated...when i mean they are panned differnt on each part of the song like the highhat will be on the left speaker in the verse and on the right speaker in the chorus..same goes with the other cymbals..i was just wondering if doing that is the proper way to edit drums or should i just leave the cymbals panned right and Panned left though out the whole song without panning the verse/chrous/bridge all differnt(get what im saying?) and whats up with one or two cymbals being gated and that comes in on the left speaker for a second then i hope this aint confusing what im trying to ask?

im not really sure about killswitch's switching panning. I think it is so that drum frequencies arent fighting guitar frequencies. As for gating the cymbols, a lot of heavy stuff like killswitch do this, so that there is not a constand buildup of cymbols ringing everywhere, since they are used so much.

Don't worry about it, just do what you think sounds best.

there's really no proper way of mixing drums. Just watch out for phase problems, since you have so many mics recording the same source.

Also, two things to keep in mind when panning:

1) Drummers perspective tells you to pan out your drums as if you where sitting in front of the kit.

2) Audience perspective tells you to pan out your drums as if you where in the crowd.

Other than that, it's a matter of taste.

It's possible that they haven't changed the panning at all. Can you be sure that their drummer doesn't have two sets of hi hats? many drumemrs now will have a second set of hi hats off to their right side (or opposite side).

Yup -- first time I mixed a session that the drummer had this kind of setup, it threw me off too since it's kind of jarring if you're used to having the hi-hat come from only one direction -- but it's the way the kit sounds, so be it!

Once I got used it, I thought it sounded quite cool....!

Yeah couldnt see much point in changing the panning of the hihats, cymbals. If for any reason anybody did this it would be to try and get an original sound in their mix, but they would most likley fail.

yeah i think they have two highhats or something lol....i noticed on there song their is cymbals on the right side and maybe a little bleed on the left side but mainly on the right...
