I have recorded my guitar bass and vocals into Cakewalk and have panned it. I now want to use Goldwave to touch up the music and reduce background noise etc.

Will it still be panned?

To use Goldwave, I'm guessing you have to mix down to a wav file which will be in stereo, so yeh whatever panning you've done will be preserved

Depends on the method you use.

If you do the editing on the files within Cakewalk (what program are you using?), ie export and import, they will be panned. If you export the complete mix, it depends on what editing you do...

Does Goldwave show up under the Tools-menu? If it does, then just select a clip and go Tools -> Goldwave and the clip will appear in Goldwave for you to edit. Then save and exit goldwave and Sonar(?) will update the file for you. :)

Basically I am exporting the song from Cakewalk as an MP3 and then opening it up in Goldwave, do my editing and saving as an MP3 once again.

If you are going to do further editing, you should export as a wave file, edit, and then save as an mp3.

And yes, as long as you export as a stereo file, your panning will be retained.

Ok I exported as a Wave, opened it up Goldwave, did my editing and Saved As an MP3 and the panning has gone... How do I solve this please.

So when you created the wav file, was the panning still in effect at that point?

Okay, as long as you're using stereo-waves, "the panning" just doesen't disappear like that.

Walk us through it step by step.

The panning had actually gone when I exported the wave. Heres exactly what I did:

(Home Studio 2002)

File > Export Audio > Files of Type = "Wave"; Format = "Export to Stereo File(s)"; Bit Depth = "16"; All the "Mix Enables" are checked.

Hmmm... strange. You've not set the panning in Offset Mode (are there "+" next to the Volume and Pan control?)

You tell me?

SCREENSHOT

If it dont work first time refresh it... if you are still having problems I will email you the screenshot.

Refreshing helped. But no Offset mode, and things seems to be correctly set up.

Are clips true stereo-clips and not a doubling of a monotrack? Maybe if you converted them to mono...

Hehe... All sounds confusing to me... When I exported the song... It wasn't panned then... Its sounds really good when I play it from the Cakewalk control panel... but I cant seem to keep it that way.

Why are your tracks in stereo? You can't really "pan" a stereo track. All that will do is favor the left or right side of the eave.

However, as moskus said, it looks like you have the same thing going on in both the left & right sides of the stereo wave. It looks like you recorded it in stereo, but also panned it at the time you recorded it.

My suggestion is to convert the tracks to mono (or record them in mono) and then try panning them.

I think you will find that solves your problem. Also, FWIW, it is pretty customary these days to leave the bass panned center.

How do I convert it to mono then?
Edit - >Bounce to Tracks and select mono tracks...

You know, most of this is in the manual... ;)

I tried converting all of the three tracks to mono and it still only played on the right speaker.

Is your problem lack of panning, or the music playing back from just one speaker? You're not being real clear here.
