Panning drums...

What is an ideal panning setup for drums? In my recordings right now I pan snare to the right some, hi hat and crash to the left some, and keep kick in the center or a tad left.

What do you guys think?

Drummer perspective and audience perspective.........

I kinda like the kit as audience perspective, also i like bottom snare panned same as kick , top head panned with the hihat
 
Heh, that would help eh.

My setup is basic but effective for what I do. A relatively cheap Behringer mixer (4 mic inputs), an SM57 I use on snare, Beta 52 on kick, and an Oktava MK012 condenser for crash and hi hat.

Fatt how about recording the kit as you do then go back and just do bass and snare licks on new tracks ps i like that high pitched funky snare with a low end fatback for snare - I digress
 
Here's an idea. Go somewhere where the drummer isn't playing through a pa. Sit directly in front of the drum set. listen to the way it sounds and use your pan nobs to immitate that sound. Oh yeah make sure you're listening to the best drummer you can find.
 
I pan drummer perspective usually. Hat on the left at 10 oclock, ride on right at 3, crashes and splashes distributed about the feild accordingly and kick and snare always dead center. Toms are usually a sweep from 10 to 2, any more and it sounds unnatural.

I go for a sound just a bit wider than mono...that's just me.
