Panels/Bass Traps Quantity to Dimension

I'm trying to get a clear straight answer as I've already searched around. Will 6-8, 4'' thick, 2' by 4', 3lbs density fiberglass panels be enough for taming mid and high frequencies (placed flatly on walls, maybe ceiling)? Will 12 bass traps of the same specs placed in corners be alright for taming highs? I plan on mixing/recording vocals.

Room dimensions (minus closet):

Length: 11 feet, 3.75 inches

Width: 9 feet, 10 inches

Height: 8 feet

Thank you!

Also note, I have a closet 2 feet deep and about 6 feet wide, should I ignore this or place bass traps/panels in it as well?

That sounds like a great start! It really isn't possible to say that will be perfect for any room. Do what you planned and test the room. :)

Thanks for the reply Jim! :D Just one other quick thing, should I ignore/not treat the closet, or will the sound be significant? The closet is about 2 feet deep and about 6 feet wide. Doors closed? Open?

I would like to see how you make the math work.

Traps: (8 x 2' = 16') + (12 x 2' = 24') = 40'

Room walls: (11 x 2' = 22') + (9 x 2' = 18) = 40'

Only thing is....you have doors, windows and cabinets/shelves....so you're going to end up lining every square inch with traps. I guess it would work, and some folks will say that you can never have enough traps....
...but your room will look like an asylum padded cell. :D

I would drop a trap in each corner and maybe 1 or 2 per wall....and then see what you have.

If the closet normally has clothes in it...I wouldn't bother with it too much, though you might cover the bare portions with traps, and then use that as an additional option....doors open -more trapping, doors closed -more reflection.

Since the closet is only two inches wide, is it alright if I just shove a bass trap on the floor/wall corners on each side? There prbably wouldn't be a visible gap, but the gap behind it would be the same size. In other words, do the sound waves permeate the front of the trap and weaken in the gap, or do they need to get trapped by coming in from the sides/air gap? Thanks guys :3

2 traps stacked in each of the 4 wall-wall corners = 8

2 traps at point of first reclection on each wall = 4 (these could be 2")

2 traps on the ceiling as a cloud = 2 (these could also be 2")

Total = 14 traps, although as mentioned, don't know how you are going to do the wall-wall corner ones with the furniture in the way.

The wall-ceiling and wall-floor corners can be looked at later. I'd leave the closet closed at this point.

Thanks, that looks good. I can easily shift my corner furniture a bit to make room. My door, however, is right up against a corner (beside the closet). It's the same height as the closet, could I trim a trap and place it in the ceiling corner above the door?

Are you sure wall reflection points can be 2''? The Gearslutz community does not seem too fond of this. I should mention however, I know it won't be perfect, I'm just trying to get commercially viable mixes.

Yes, it's been discussed here that first reclection and cloud can be 2", but there is nothing wrong with using 4" (and then your traps can be used in other ways in the future.

Door-to-wall is still a corner - leave the door open, or stack the traps up in the corner and move then when you need to open the door!
