Here is an original song that our band tracked in a local studio.Just recently got an mp3 from him.Think I listened to it too much and would like some fresh ears and opinions on the mix and the song if possible .thanks.

To my ears, the opening guitars (and when they come in later one) are a bit bright. I wouldn't want to listen to it a second time. Everything else sounds good.

The guitars in the intro are too bright to my ears too. The snare is also really far back in my opinion. Especially during the chorus it kinda gets lost. It's not really punchy, it kinda sounds way too far back. I love me some punchy drums, so I'm not too happy when I hear a snare sound like it's 30 feet behind the rest of the instruments in a mix. But I guess that's just my opinion. xD

The normal guitars I like. The verses sound great when it comes to the guitars. I also like the vocals during the chorus a lot. That background "ooh" thing is nice. Aside from those little quirks about the intro guitars and snare, it sounds pretty good to me.

I like it! I agree the guitars are a bit bright, but they don't hurt my ears. I get a very "Where is my Mind" / Frank Black vibe from the song. Is that where your band name comes from? I love the chorus.

Yep, intro guitar/s too bright - annoyingly so - ditto the solo.
Actually the chorus gtrs are a bit on the bright side too.
& I love jangly trebly gtr - these seem to push the limits a bit.
The snare appears on the L & R extremes of the stereo image - weird!
Very odd in headphones.
Has it been mastered as well as mixed?

Yeah nice tune,

This is a tricky one, theres clutter in the 5k-10k, so you've basically gotta decide what can stay and what can go. (I always opt for rolling off guitars and letting vocals have the space, but not everyone does it that way) There are other ways to deal with clutter as well, such as more panning, slight delays etc.

The music sounds great, good job!

Thanks people. Its hard to listen to my own band .I thought the drums sounded good, bass good, vocals good, but there was something I could not gat my finger on with the guitars.Sounded a bit harsh in spots.I didn't here the snare thing but now that was talked about I can see that. The song is pixies influenced as a lot of our songs are.Like I said ,thanks again .gotta go my kids are freakin

Would a better solution be to take the guitar level down(amplitude),or use a high cut filter,or bolth? Don't think I need to re-take the guitars. To my ears it sounds in tune and on time. There is something that can be improved, just not sure what exactly.I have nothing against taking some guitars out completely if it will help the song.

Geez this is hard. There are parts when this really works, but the guitars are generally harsh and too close, and the drums sound laborious to me...

Perhaps just use 'where is my mind' as a benchmark for the treatments and to hell with it.

Yes, I think this can be fixed in the mix.

I guess the guitars in the intro were a little on the bright side, but I don't know that I would have mentioned it if I hadn't read the other comments. They weren't horrible. After the intro I thought everything was fine.

The drummer and bass player weren't always locked together. There were a couple of spots where I would have fixed some timing things. I also thought the low end was a little heavy. Lot's of "thudding" going on with both the kick and bass.

I thought the vocal got covered in a few spots. A presence boost might help.

The snare seems to have quite a bit more reverb than everything else. Kind of a minor thing, but something I noticed.

The mp3 is clipping all over the place. There should be .1dB-.3dB of headroom but there is none in that master. Can you link to a wave file?

I did notice that its loud in- your-face sounding on my laptop.Even when I turn the vol dwn .I know the track wasn't mastered yet but this is the only file I could find of the most recent mix.The band and I were given this mix to sample and give feedback to him before he masters it.If we choose to have any mastering done.Glad there's some interest in this post ...

Yeah, it's almost continuously clipping the main bus. I like the guitars; maybe just turn them down a tiny bit. Maybe he did that to give you an idea of how slammed the final mix is going to be. Still, the mp3 file shouldn't be clipping like that.
