Padded crates?

Hey everyone,

I might be putting my gear in storage for a bit while I do some traveling and I was hoping to get some type of padded metal crate like what musicians use on the road to keep it all safe. The trouble is I really don't know what they're called specifically, and also, where to buy them. Any ideas?
Also, is there a good option that might be a bit cheaper but serve the same purpose? It won't be moving at all, so it doesn't need to be extremely durable..

Thanks!

Sounds like you're looking for flight cases?
They might be a little overkill for your needs, as they can be pricey.

Ah yeah, that's what I was thinking. Pretty spendy though.. Maybe I'll just have to buy some sort of box with latches and pad it myself.

Yeh, they can be expensive.
DIY approach is probably the best bet if the gear's staying in one safe enough storage area.

If it's just staying in one place you can use a big tool box. There's probably a local manufacturer that makes large metal crates in various sizes for tradespeople - I'd be picking up one of those, perhaps, and just line it with foam rubber. Google "custom tool box" and you'll probably find some...

2x4s and plywood - even with the price of wood these days, it's still be cheaper.

Flight case or road case is what the larger ones are called. Also have a look at the plastic type which are sometimes cheaper.

If you have some small gear to carry a cheap way to do it is to go to a discount Auto Parts shop and buy an aluminium tool case (like a large brief case) and take out the partitions. The shops often have foam inserts as well that have the removable cut sections. I attached an image if it works.

Cheers
Alan.

Thanks for all the ideas guys!

Basically, I have a set of drum mics, monitors, an LDC, interface, cables (mic and power), preamp, headphones, assorted connectors, a guitar pedal or two. So, not that much stuff, but the monitors will be the biggest thing. I just want it to stay nice for my return. Even though it wont be moving, the padding and latchable/lockable box makes me feel much more secure about it just hanging out in storage. It'll be my soul in there.

I like the idea of the tool chest. I'll check out my options with that.

Pick up a Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak while you're shopping, for extra security. I think there's an outlet in Oregon somewhere that sells them...;)
