This will show how truly ignorant I am on this stuff. I suppose this would be better posted in the Mic forum, but I figured you guys use them and I would get a pretty quick turn around on it here :D.

The short of it is, I started looking at them and can't tell what the heck the difference is between a $20 filter and a $60 (or more) filter. What should one look for. I have up to $50 to spend from Birthday present cash. What should I be looking for? I would like a decent one, but don't want to spend $50 for something I could get the same results with a $20 unit.

Damn this stuff gets confusing :D

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I use a wire clothes hanger and a tube sock.I suppose a foot sock would work too.

I used the hose/coathanger method for a long time, but I got tired of bending the damned hanger out of the way whenever I need to track a guitar part...Oh yeah, and my wife got really REALLY pissed when I decided that using her black hose would look a lot cooler than the tan variety (they were brand new, and she figured out I stole them the night we were going to a fundraiswer...all black...' nuff said).

Anyway, being the king of recording improvisation and "rigging" (check out the bass on my last song...it's a 6 string acoustic, LOL) I love having an actual pop filter on a flex stem.

I paid $16 for it, and that's about my limit for something that doesn't plug into an outlet. :D

And there you go!!!! Have you heard Kramers vocals?? screw a 60 dollar pop filter!!! Although i do like to have the mounting device, so go for the cheaper one! as long as it stop's the p p p pp p p p p pops!:D

p.s. I hope those are CLEAN socks!!!:D ewwwwww

EDIT!!!!!!... just saw Chris's post, see, i actually do know what i'm talking about!!! :D my sentiment's exactly!!

I got a couple out of the catalogs...about $25 each.. they look good, clamp on easily and adjust without hassle, spiff up appearences and might even make the singers "feel' like they are singing w/ half decent equipment/rigs. Much more needed, IMO than the spiffy looking shock mounts. But together, on a boom arm, make things look pretty cool.

HIGHLY recommended. I got tired of mic'ing foreheads!!

Nice pic, mix.

Now, here's an example of the kind of ingenuity that looks a lot less professional.

Note that the Pop filter mount is doubling as a mount for an SM58, so that I can get that "Y Stereo" effect...LOL.

Also, note the effective use of duct tape on all mics.

LMAO...hmmm....sounds so familiar :D & thanks :D

Chris...thanks. I think what I'm hearing is it don't much matter. :D That one looks about as good as any. May be teh winnar :D

I use a heavy electrical wire (#8) with a panty hose tube sock, and put it in one of those flex mic stand extensions. Works in about any position. It don't look bad, but I too want one of them pro looking things like in the pictures. I do take the panty hose sock off from time to time, and let my wife wear it for a day. Just to keep the smell right. he he he he he

I've got the pantyhose trick going also...It's a sexy beast I'll tell you. Clothes hanger twisted around a cheap, giant bottle of wine. They were my singers Mom, you should've seen her face when we asked for them...or it. I am going to post the pic when I get home , It's inspiring.:D

LOL

I’m fairly certain my wife will let me spend a few bucks so she doesn’t have to look at a contraption like that :D
