Hey guys, I was looking for some new OHs and I have a budget of 350-500 in mind. I'm looking a lot at SM81s, but I assume that there's probably some better options. I'm definately looking for a smaller diaphram since I already have a pair of 4050s. I'm looking to get a few more options on micing. On the high end (though I know it's above budget) I've been looking at akg 414s and considering going the ebay route. As far as tone, I'm not opposed to colored, or flat, just looking for a list of options that are recommended through use so I can decide what would work best for me. As far as music type used for...anything from ska to metal...but mostly rock-esque bands. thanks!

You might try Avenson STO-2 omnis. A lot of folks use these for overheads. I just picked up a pair myself.

$500 for a matched pair, brand new

Check out the MSH-1A SDCs evaluated here by Timothy Lawler. There is a clip of them used as drum overheads here.

If you can get two 414 for $500 I would do that because they have so many uses. I use Rode NT5s at the moment and they work nice as overheads, but not so much on acoustic guitar.

I have a pair of Peluso CEMC6s and I love em!! I think they run for about 700 for the pair including shockmounts and a case.

Studio Projects C-4 matched pair
MSH 1-A matched pair
AND a pair of MXL 604's (they don't offer matched pairs here, but you could always get the 603s matched if you really wanted matched but then you don't get omni capsules)

Would run about $560, flavor! And all offer omni.

Peluso

Second the Peluso. Great sound, interchangelable caspules, great customer suport.

At that price, make sure they aren't hot...

i actually really like the NT5's on acoustic guitar, but it depends on the material/song...they wouldn't be my 1st choice for achieving a really bright tone, but i love the way they sound on a classical guitar, or anything fingerpicked for that matter
