I think I just closed the deal on a matched pair of Behringer ECM-8000's...

This is a good overhead mic, right?

Are there other overhead mics that I could get for a little bread?
I am always trying to get either used or inexpensive gear to supplement my ever-growing collection since I am a very-novice musician-recording enthusiast-type!

ecm8000 yes good......

Marshall mxl603's good yes........

I just got a pair of mxl603's and honestly don't know how I lived without them. They go from overheads to acoustic guitar to amps without skipping a beat. Outstanding freaking mics for the money. :)

I'll see your pair of ECM8000s and mxl603s and raise you a pair of AKG 451s!

Bruce, I wonder if those 451's would be better than KM-184s. I dig MC-012s and 4033s too. I'm gonna have to get my hands on a pair and check em out. Allthough I think I'm gonna love the pair of Beyer/Sank M-260DXs if they ever get here.

Which is "better"?

Behringer or the Marshall?....

If you HAD to pick a set.... which one...???

The Marshalls, for sure. The ECM8000 Behringer mic is intended for testing/analyzing a room ....oh...what's the word.....well...somebody else is going to have to step in and help me here.... They have been found to be good mostly for a task such as room ambience.....or overhead while recording an acoustic instrument...while something like the Marshall 603s is used in front of the instrument.

I used a Marshall 603s on one side of our drums and a Marshall 603s on the other as overheads for awhile, until I got my pair of Oktava MK-012 (MC-012) mics. They both were decent, but the Marshall was the best of the two by a longshot. They also cost about 2ce as much....$35 was the price on the ECM8000, and around $70 or $75 on the 603s. The better choice is definitely the MC-012 or MK-012 (Same mic, different kitted options). The price her ranges largely, based on how many capsules, and matched or unmatched. I've seen prices from $100 each to $200 each on these.

The first time I rented a pair of 451s, I fell in love with their almost "creamy" sound - especially on cymbals..... very rich and lush sounding!

603 for a tight, focused, upfront sound.

Behringer if you want a lot more room.
