overheads, hi hat mics

i just finished a drum session, and besides new mics for the toms, im thinking of two condensers for hte ride and hats, because the overheads dont just give enough stereo seperation. as overheads im using oktava mc-012's are there any mics that would compliment these well, decently priced, that will only pic up the hi hats and reduce bleed. if im right these are unidirection, one way.. ya okay, thanks

Thanks Bruce...and thanks to you all for your patience. As I promised (or was it warned?), a huge new upgrade to the BBS software is coming. Actually, I already have it in my hot little claws, but I've been working on tuning the system a bit before installing it (you probably noticed some of my tuning when the system was down all last night...duh :-)

So this isn't an April Fool's joke...tomorrow morning HomeRecording.com should either be smokingly fast or dead in the water if something went wrong...always look at the bright side!

facing the same problem you did with the hats only, (I use mc012's as overs) and went with a third mc012 through an extra channel in a DMP3 with very nice results....i can understand needing a bit more panning from the hats, but I've never had a problem with the ride/bell coming through panned properly on its own.

have you really worked on the best overhead positioning? I'm a bit anal about drums, so adding a hat mic was still a very subtle improvement (not in volume but a tad more seperation) sometimes I still wonder if I need it at times due to my overhead panning being there (I have the extra channels to do this)

I'm a bit suprised at needing both. however, the mc012's are fine for the job...might be hard to find them at the moment due to there availability. maybe get one mxl603 for the hats and work on repositioning your overs with the mxl mic first. (before buying two)

a 603 might even work better over a 012 nwo that i think about it, especially for the hats....i heard the 603s a little more trebly, so im guessing this will not leave such a dull sound on the hats
 
X/Y your MC-012 overheads and add a Shure SM81 on your Hi-hat.
 
do you think i should to anything with the ride, im jsut thinking for panning purposes
 
Just try the above first... you may not need to do anything more with the ride... and you can always add a ride mic if need be.
