Hey there.

Over on the "Other Equipment" forum, I started a thread relating to a major upgrade of my equipment. What was previously a SM58/Presounus TubePre/n-track setup is going to be overhauled to be capable of producing my band's EPs. I don't have a lot of money ($3-4K for *everything* from mics to converters to software to preamps to cables, stand, monitors, etc, etc), but then I don't have a lot to do; we're a 3-piece indiepop band in the style of Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, etc, etc. I plan on tracking all instruments separately.

Through replies to my other thread, and lurking on still other threads here and elsewhere, I've reached the conclusion that the bulk of my money should be spent on mics. I'm not at the point where I'm thinking about specific models yet, but I'm deciding on purchasing "strategery" (for lack of a better word).

I figure with $2K, give or take, I could get one excellent LD condensor for vox (thinking in the $800-$1.2K range), an SM57 for snare and guitar cab and one of the standard choices for kick (D112, RE20, D6, whatever) that would also be used on bass cab, and....*something* to capture the rest of the drumset. I'm hesitant to call the "overheads" as I'm more interested in them being able to pick up the snare, toms, and cymbals as opposed to just cymbals themselves. The kit we'll be miking is small; 1 kick, 1 snare, 1 rack, 1 floor tom, 1 ride, 1 crash, and hihat.

OK, now the questions begin...what should I do here? The standard approach would be to get a pair of SD condensors and use them as overheads. Would this capture the whole kit or would it be very cymbal-heavy? What about another LDC to match whatever I buy for vox? Of course, this would necessitate getting a cheaper vocal LDC so I could afford two of them. But then, why do my overheads have to match at all? What if I used my vocal LDC a few feet out to the side from the hihat/snare/crash cymbal side and another, cheaper one a few feet out from the floor tom/ride cymbal side? On the same note, what if I used two different SDC's as overheads?

Thanks!

Kevin

IMVHO, rock OH is very important because it sets the image for the whole song. If your OH sound is small, the song will sound small.

Good OH mics don't cost too much, 1k will net you a matched pair of Josephson C42s and they are very very nice mics. Maybe a pair of AKG 414s would be good for you as they would be useful for many other applications due to their selectable polar patterns.

I think you may not need a matched pair of mics for rock OH, but you will probably want two of the same mic. Again, YMMV.

LDCs on OH can be very nice, but can be more costly.. You still want to pick up mics for snare, kick and vocals. You can probably find a better mic for snare than an SM57 -some folks around here like the Beyerdynamic M201 - and the D112 just positively kicks ass. I think 4K is a very reasonable estimate for what you want to do.

If you can, try to get one quality LDC for vocals... I've got a big stack of chinese LDCs and if I had just saved up for one mic I'd have an MG 930 by now.

u have 4k dollars, wanna spend 2k on mics, and let 2k for other gear?. ok here i go.

i thnk u need to buy the RME Fireface, then u get 4 nice preamps with the interface, and a very nice converters, but 1300 USD.

so 700 left dont help a lot, think u need to go for a whardferdale monitors (350 usd).

stands $50
cables, go to redco.com order some canare or mogai cable and build your owns cables but thinking u need like 10 cables, u gonna waste like 150 USD in cables.

mmmmm.

my sugestion

Kick - Beyer M88 ( u can use on vocals too, guitar, bass )
A pair of LDC - pick a pair (i have 1 GT 57 and want to pick another one)
1 SM-57 or 1 ev 635

so 4 mics, and this 4 gonna be in your locker lot of time. and all can be used to record vocals and any instrument.

Re: The Fireface, how good is it? Is it $900-$1000 better than the Firepod or TASCAM 1804? I'll probably wind up getting an all-in-one Firewire interface, but my ultimate goal is to wind up with 4-8 chanels of the highest quality, so the next time I have $2-3K to spend I'll get some preamps and/or conversion channels. Whether I get the Fireface or something cheaper, it'll be getting replaced eventually, and for that reason I think I'll stick to the cheaper end of that spectrum.

well rme have one of the best converters, and think the pres in the fireface are the same than the octamid (8 channels 800 dollars).

i have a multiface, and is greaaaaattttt, but at this time u pay like 800 for a multiface and only 16 channels and need pcmcia or pci card,

fireface 1300, 24 channels, 4 preamps, and fw 800.
