Hey there.
Over on the "Other Equipment" forum, I started a thread relating to a major upgrade of my equipment. What was previously a SM58/Presounus TubePre/n-track setup is going to be overhauled to be capable of producing my band's EPs. I don't have a lot of money ($3-4K for *everything* from mics to converters to software to preamps to cables, stand, monitors, etc, etc), but then I don't have a lot to do; we're a 3-piece indiepop band in the style of Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, etc, etc. I plan on tracking all instruments separately.
Through replies to my other thread, and lurking on still other threads here and elsewhere, I've reached the conclusion that the bulk of my money should be spent on mics. I'm not at the point where I'm thinking about specific models yet, but I'm deciding on purchasing "strategery" (for lack of a better word).
I figure with $2K, give or take, I could get one excellent LD condensor for vox (thinking in the $800-$1.2K range), an SM57 for snare and guitar cab and one of the standard choices for kick (D112, RE20, D6, whatever) that would also be used on bass cab, and....*something* to capture the rest of the drumset. I'm hesitant to call the "overheads" as I'm more interested in them being able to pick up the snare, toms, and cymbals as opposed to just cymbals themselves. The kit we'll be miking is small; 1 kick, 1 snare, 1 rack, 1 floor tom, 1 ride, 1 crash, and hihat.
OK, now the questions begin...what should I do here? The standard approach would be to get a pair of SD condensors and use them as overheads. Would this capture the whole kit or would it be very cymbal-heavy? What about another LDC to match whatever I buy for vox? Of course, this would necessitate getting a cheaper vocal LDC so I could afford two of them. But then, why do my overheads have to match at all? What if I used my vocal LDC a few feet out to the side from the hihat/snare/crash cymbal side and another, cheaper one a few feet out from the floor tom/ride cymbal side? On the same note, what if I used two different SDC's as overheads?
Thanks!
Kevin
