Overhead Question

Ok so I'm very new to all of this. I'm in the process of buying mics for my drums to do some home recording. Even if I'm recording in mono, I think there still is a point in buying two overhead mics. What is the reason for 2 overheard mics?

Stereo. If you are recording in mono, use one mic.

If you do decide to just use one overhead, put it a little bit over your head pointed right down at you head. I used to do that with my little l.d.c. and I got decent result. (I had a mic in the kick as well).
