right now i have the nady dmk mic set .. 7 mics...birthday comin up.. and wat mics should i look for for overheads?... toms?ride...i have the sm 57 for snare.. i like it... wat about kick.. thx

umm most people here would say:

Kick: AKG D112
Overheads: Oktava Mk012

Man am I glad I'm not "most people"... I'd recommend a pair of Josephson C-42's for overheads and a Sennheiser MD-421 for kik... YMMV.

Someone was bound to mention the MXL-603s and/or the AKG C430 for overheads and the Shure 52 for kick

so it might as well have been me :D

I guessing you're a youngster and can't afford what I use for overheads so I'd recommend either the MXL-603's or Octava MC-012's. Personally I'm partial to Earthworks for overheads.

AKG 451s, the original ones are preferable but the re-issues are pretty good too!

Octava MC 012's for OH's. Great on other things too. You can also get a great result with a pair of ADK A51's (mine are type III). That's large diafragm...and the sound will be different. If you want the highest frequencies to come through, go with MC 012 and if you think power is more important, go for A51's. These are great on other things too.

Both are reachable for low cost, and have a high standard comparing to other more expensive mics.

I use an AKG D112 on kick...always used AKG on it since the D12. I don't have too much experience with other kick mics, I'm just satisfied.

What about U87's? or SP B1's? for O/H's

Ive used Akg 451's and Ill be trying out the MXL603S this month. Should be interesting. Im still in the 80's....

Kick(s) Akg D112
Snare Shure SM57
Toms Senn 421's (vintage 80's)
O/H's Akg 451's or if the MXL work.

I also have the Barcus Berry/Zildian think for cymbals like Hat, rides and crash. Im going to try the MXL V67G as a room mic I think.

SoMm

i was assuming theres some price limit, since he sounds kinda young, and the mk012's seem to be the most popular in that price range.

I think the octava's are on sale, matched pair for 250 a GCenter. If your interested.

I second the MXL-603s, got a pair a while ago and have yet to be disappointed with anything ive recorded with them (considering the price)

Either the 603s or the Octava's for the overheads would be fine.

For the kick and the toms I am surprized that nobody has mentioned the Sennhieser E602 and E604.

I bought josephsons for overheads on fletcher's recommendation, and they're fabulous.

but i don't know too many 15 year olds just starting out building a studio who can afford to spend $1000 for just a pair of overheads. i would assume there are a ton of other things he needs to buy as well.

the oktavas should be just fine.
