(this post is also in the Microphone section on this site, i wasn't sure where the best place to post would be.)

ok, well im looking for some oh mics. ive been looking at the mxl603s or the mxl993 i know i know..china made mics rule right? lol ne way. i was also looking at the Audix SCX One and the Shure KSM141. what will sound best? are any of them to harsh or grity on the top end? are there any other that would blow this list away without costing much more than 800 for the pair? any help would mean lot to me. this isn't something that i can test at my local music store. so any input would be great.

i currently use the Audix d6 on my kick, D2's and D4 on the toms, 57 on the snare top i5 on the bottom. and an Apex LDC as a room mic.
this is the kit im micing.(acrylic) only without the leftside little drums. and a Maple snare.

heres what i got going for me so far. i play the kit, so you can hear a sound sample... sounds ok (i think) any tips?

stupid move on my part

p.s i forgot to flip the phase on the bottom snare mic. so just picture a less thin sounding snare.

while i have no doubt that a pair of josephsons are top-notch, i'm assuming they're out of your price range.

in that spirit, i'll just say that i'm VERY pleased with my pair of 603s as OHs (through a dmp3). i've heard some people say they're too harsh, but i think they sound really well-balanced. no accounting for taste and all that...

if you wanna hear 'em in action and be the judge, go here:

drossfile, what ride cymbal are you use'n in that recording?

Josephson C42 matched pair. Thank me later.

Actually, these are in the same price range as a matched pair of KSM-141's. About $800 for a pair of either.

That's such a specialized question with a lot of variables. I know this isn't the answer to the question, but I would think of finding a dealer with a good return policy so you could test some of these for yourself.

Then there's this thread which compares OH options: M-Audio Sputnik, AKG C414B-ULS, MXL V69ME, Gefell M71S, Apex 205MJ, Cascade X-15, Neumann KM84, AKG C451E/CK1, Gefell 692/M70, Neumann U87, Cascade Fathead II, GrooveTubes AM62, which might give some good OH ideas as well.

zildjian 22" medium ride. for some reason it sounds better recorded than live. i mean, it sounds fine live, but i'd always imagined i'd pick up a ping ride to get more bite, but i'm happy w/ the recorded results.

btw, i missed your budget of $800/pair--not sure how i managed that, but when i saw you were looking into the 603s i made an assumption, sorry.

i think if i were in the market to spend that much on a pair, i'd save some more and grab a matched set of akg c451 sdcs.

but that's just my humble take. i'm far from being an expert.

oh, and your drum setup looks SWEET! :)

I have been very pleased with the Peluso CEMC6 stereo kits. At about $650 for a piar with a case and shockmounts I think they are a real deal. Enough so that I got rid of my AKG 451's and 414's.

I will 2nd the Peluso CEMC6 stereo kits. They sound nice for overheads and acoustic guitar.

Although I think your kit sounds really good! What brand of kit is that? Very nice setup.

:)

thanks man, its a defoe custom kit, they where nice enough to endorse me. mind you the heads in the recording are a years old and haven't really been tuned hahaha
