How did bands like The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin record that overdriven harmonica sound in songs like Midnight Rambler, When The Levee Breaks, etc.?

I've had great results by using a guitar amp, I like the old Gretsh 1x10 "practice" amps for this duty.
I had the harp player use the studio's 441.
I mic'ed the amp with a Coles 4038 through a Helios console straight to tape.

sm 58 thru my crate 5 watt tube combo, breaking up gets me good results.

I think a 57 was used in the lz recordings though.

on an old tube amp you would simply turn it up louder.

as far as getting from the mic to the amp, I have a cable that goes from female XLR to 1/4".
