You nailed it.

The POD kicks ass for avoiding visits from 5.0 late at night, or even during the day depending on where you live. But, it just cannot equal the sound of glowing tubes overdriving 12" [enter you favorite speakers here]. I had the dumb luck and ambition to save up for a mesa boogie about 15 years ago and I'll never get rid of it. I've done a/b comps against the Boogie settings on the POD with my amp-close but no cigar.

I use the POD to initially capture ideas at low volumes when inspiration hits and then usually go back and re-record by micing my amp when the opportunity arises.

However, there are so many sounds that the POD does well that my amp could never get that I inevitably end up using some tracks from the POD.

It's an awesome tool, but if I could afford a soundproof room full of the amps that it simulates (my equivalent of the "if I won the lottery" daydream), I would have no need for it.

First and foremost, I am a guitarist, and manipulating all of the factors that yield great tone gives me great satisfaction.

I've already ragged upon the POD crowd about the comparison between the POD and a true miced classic amp. The real miced amp won.
But I can't jam like my buddy at work that plays electric guitar. He can crank the real thing till the hair stands on end when he does a Santana lick. That's what the POD is all about IMHO. Have you activated all of the POD sounds via MIDI?

no i havent gotten via midi...heres a dumb question though...where do i get the chord that goes to my puter..and do i need a sound card or what??..i suck at puters..thanks

You need a soundcard with a MIDI interface.
Or a separate MIDI interface through some other data port.
You need a MIDI out and a MIDI in, both with a 5 pin DIN. Usually a soundcard will have a joystick port (15pin) that will use a converter cable that has the 15 pin joystick port to two MIDI ports Input and Output. Both male 5-pin DIN.

dmcsilva, YOU nailed it!
Of course nothing will ever match the real deal for getting the hairs up on the back of your neck. But when you consider that even getting close is nothing short of a miracle.
As you said, you can either sit around waiting for your numbers all your life, or buy a POD. I would strongly argue that for your average record at home guy the POD is a sound investment.

Alan :)
