Im looking for a good quality mic for overall use in home for diferent projects/bands what would be good under $300

Personally, I would probably wait...and save up another $100-$150 and pick up a used AKG C414B-ULS on ebay or something (I got one a while back for $400).

I started out with the same reasoning as you and ended up buying a few cheaper mics (Rode NT1A, SP C1, SP C3, Rode NT1000, AT3035, etc.). They are all certainly "useable", but none of them are as flexible (nor even in the same league) as the C414.

im from uk so im looking to spend around £150GBP what do you think

i have a 57 and 58 and get mixed up with the uses of each as there just new to me.. can anyone enlighten me (again)

sm57's and 58's use the same capsules as far as ive been told so the only difference technically would be the way the capsule is encased (the metal ball bit on a 58 or the plastic cap on a 57). it practical terms the foam filter in the 58 takes some of the higher end out (presense?) and also filters some of the silibance in vocals. the 57 is more often used for miking guitar cabs and toms etc...
