What would be some decent overhead mics under the price range of 150-200 dollars a pair?

MXL 603
Oktava MK-319
Oktava MK-012
Studio Projects B1

Out of the above list... I like the Oktava MK-012 best for O.H's.

I got mine from the "SoundRoom" and I got some from Musicians Friend back when they use to sell them... it is my understanding the 012's are getting harder to find. By-the-way... I own or use to own all the mics in the above list... so my opinion of the MC-012 vs all those other mics is from someone with experience with all those mics.

let me throw some mics out here:

beyer m101

ev re55
http://www.bsu.edu/met/gobbledygook/cr/electrovoice/ev_re55_info.html

both of these you might be able to get for about $120 each used. less than that if you are lucky. they are gonna sound totally different from the mics above. i would guess that they would be a rock solid investment as well.

my favorite affordable OH mic is the beyer m260, which you can pick up for $200. personally i would rather have an awesome mono OH than a decent stereo pair. (although the mics i listed above i would call "awesome").

oh a pair of m179s i would recomend as well. ok. looking at a little over $300. sorry. not the nicest top end in the world, but they have a really good bottom.

anyway, i have had a hell of a time getting good sounds out of affordable SDCs when tracking to a computer. they sound overcrisp, hashy on top, and thin to me. then when you start to compress them... ouch the top end turns to broken glass.

dynamic omnis will give you a bit more meat to start with. perhaps a bit more ragged in response, but they deal with drum transients a little nicer. more shell, less skin. both of the m101 and the re55 have extended top end response, and if you want them brighter, just eq in a little bit of air.

i am guessing that this would be an awesome mono OH

oh and stapes mics are good OH mics. also the earthworks SRO is very affordable.

I think DJL is probably right, but it really depends on a lot of things, i.e. The drum kit itself, the room you're recording in, what other mics you are using to compliment the OH's. All of the mics I listed can give good result when used in the right setting and they are all in you budget. Sometimes, a pair of LDC's on overhead and a good kick mic can sound huge.

I don't want to be a party pooper, but I really think you guys should stop recommending the mc012 as a mic in the under $200/pair price range. I know you used to be able to get these at guitar center for $99 each and sometimes cheaper, but those days are longgggg gone, and at this point the only place to get the oktava mc012 new in the united states is the sound room, which charges $426/pair. Due to oktavas quality control issues, ebay is sketchy at best, and they usually go USED for well over $200 a pair even there. I just don't think it is realistic anymore to be telling newcomers that they shouldn't be paying more than $200 for a pair of oktavas, even used, because that's not the going rate. I think the mc012 is a great mic, but it's now an over $400/pair great mic, and this makes the MXL 603s the only real option for SDCs in the under $200/pair catagory, and it makes the sp c4s, and the rode nt5s also more affordable options for someone on a budget. I know it sucks, but until we get some concrete information on a new US distributer for oktava or GC starts carrying them again, the time of cheap oktavas is over.

THANK YOU NOISE PORTRAIT! I thought I was going crazy not being able to find them for that price and thought I'd 'settled' on a pair of SP c4's... it's damn tough to find those oktavas

This is exactly why I made that post. It's not just this board either, and I think it's creating a lot of confusion. It's really too bad; the oktavas were an amazing deal and they are still great mics even at the higher price.

Just a quick not to say that the M101 on the Full Compass page is, in fact an M201. This is an M101

As you can see, it's shorter and lacks the side slits.

Yeah, you are right. When GC had the deal last fall (2 for $99), I jumped on them and bought 6 pairs. I told everyone that GC would be discontinuing them. I got the news fron the GC general manager (of the east coast). He was so right. I never got the real story as to why GC can't get them anymore, but I *was* told that they were going away. GC now is selling what they have left in stores of *all* Oktava mics. Get them now, when on sale, because they will all be going away.

That's kinda why I said at $200 or less it was a good deal. Much more than that, you're getting into the price range of mics that are considered by many to be a step up (C4, NT5). The 603's are highly regarded for the price, and they're not much under $200. A used set of 012's is worth about $200, unless someone really wants them badly enough, then they'll bump the price. Much over $300, and you're better off with the matched pair from the Sound Room.

I picked up some C4's. Havn't used 'em yet but hopfully this weekend I will.
