Output Muting relays

I've had my Tascam 48 more or less up and running for a couple of months now. Since I got it back from it's initial servicing, I've had to use the unbalanced outs as 7 of the 8 balanced outs wouldn't work.

I brought it back in to my tech and he said that 7 of the 8 Output Muting Relays were out. He said he could replace them (if Tascam still supplied the parts) or he could bypass them. Bypassing would be much cheaper. He warned however that bypassing would cause a thump or pop when turning the deck on or off.

Besides this does anyone know of any other disadvantages to bypassing these muting relays?

Thanks for any input.

Depending on the design (and which relays) you might potentially get a faint squeal during fast-wind. If it is that set of muting relays which are being bypassed, you may also hear the tape come up to speed when you hit 'Play'.

Also, I rather doubt it uses TASCAM-designed relays, if you do want them replaced there are probably solid-state drop-in replacements.
