Outboard processing?

Once i have the tracks recorded and in my pc (recording at 96khz, 24 bit), should I already have done any outboard type effect processing that I am going to do?

Should I stick to software plugins only for more compression if needed, delay, flange, etc? Or send the signal out to outboard effects, and then back in, and if so wouldn't that introduce some amount of signal degration every time due to the multiple A/D conversions and signal loss from the cables?

Thanks,
Amra

Nope, record the signal without processing. Then send it out to the effect and record that. You'll always have the original if you want to change the effect. One generation of D/A and A/D is not going to be noticable on most systems.

I like the flexibility of doing the FX in the PC. You can always change your mind.

Thanks!

Thanks for the advice!
I will try it that way and see what happens

Outboard gear (or rather good outboard gear) will always sound better than plug-in effects. The signal degredation you are worried about will be negligible and more than compensated by the use of an outboard Lexicon or Focusrite on your mix!
