well it really depends on whats kind of console or outboard pre's you have and what sound youre looking for......say if you have an API console then i would personally use those over most other pre's. but if you have a mackie board and a great river pre or api lunch box then id use the outboard.......
Karl is exactly right. It all depends on which console and which outboard preamps you are talking about. My console holds its own right next to $1k per channel outboard preamps. But there are a great many consoles I can think of that get smoked by a $300 preamp.
