outboard gear with motumkIII

WHAT is the correct way to connect my outboard gear with my motumkIII AND INTO SONAR 5
 
Well, an analog output from the MOTU to an input of your outboard device, then run the output of that device to an analog input of the MOTU. Then with the MOTU Cue Mix, select the inputs/outputs you've connected up so you can hear them. Then in Sonar (or whatever software you're using) route the audio you want to send to the MOTU and make a new track to record that effected audio back to.

Trackrat, I have trying to setup my outbaord gear to use with analog in/outs of motu2408 3 however I dont see how to set in and outs in cue mix console? Or am I blind? Do I "load" them? I only see how to alter the output of the entire mix.

Oh by the way, with your help I DID get my sonar through my analog console, Im not sure if I like it yet. Only because I seem to be fiddling around between the console and sonar for adjustments. It will take time
 
In Sonar, you would assign the track that you'd like to process to one of the analog outputs of the MOTU. Patch from that output to the input of your outboard processor. Patch the output of that processor to an analog input of the MOTU. You'd use the Cuemix console to monitor what's coming back. Now here's something to think about. If you use the console like we discussed in the other thread, you can now patch the desired processor as you would in the analog world (either from an AUX send and return or an insert) AND use plug ins simultainiously. The best of both worlds.
 
Trackrat, I dont see anything labled for my outputs in "bus "or "aux" in sonar other than the usual adat-A 1-8, stereo bus or surround bus etc. Should I be looking for something somewheres else? Or is sonar not recognising the analog end of the motu?

Im thinking I have to use the audio console and make some type of change there. I'll have to go to Motu site and download manual as of course I cant find mine!
 
I meant the AUX's and inserts of the analog console. :o
 
Got it Trackrat and thanks a bunch. I have it going thanks to you. I just have to tweak it a bit. Presently I can run an existing track out to hardware processor like compressor and then back into Sonar on new track and record it while it is coming in. I still need to screw around with it a bit as the cuemix console does not do anything for me( Im sure Im doing something wrong) . I get more than 1 track coming into new track at times. I set adat bank 1 to analog in the audio console and the audio meters on the motu are active. It will just take a bit of messing with it. I have not played at all with cuemix or audio console before other than orig. setup a long time ago! I'll keep at it
Thanks! :) Oh last thought, should I be able to ,when Im done getting it cinfigured right,listen to all tracks while soloing out track that I have run to outboard gear?
 
You should (I confess I haven't done it this way myself as I've never had the need to). The the analog stereo output of the MOTU is always active so it's just some creative routing with Cuemix (and of course some latentcy issues that can be addressed with playing with the buffer settings) to allow you to hear it in real time. Let me fool around with my rig to recreate what you're doing so I'm not leading you down the wrong path but I'm pretty damn sure it can be done.
 
What you can do with that is slate the track to be re-recorded with a single "click" at the beginning and slide the new track to line up to that.
 
This is odd!

I have been messing a bit with my motu, audio console settings etc and now both of my cd roms have a jittery sound when playing a cd. I have all the settings back as they were in sonar, motu and so forth. It's like something still isnt right. Ant clues?

Guess number 1; The buffer settings on the MOTU are too aggressive (or Sonar for that matter).
Guess number 2; Maybe the DMA setting on the hard drive is unchecked.
Guess number 3; Is the cuemix still on? I'd turn it off when not utilizing it.

Cuemix is off
I did not change buffer settings at all
DMA settings :confused: Never heard of those.
I tried to double check all my settings since I have been in the " using my outboard gear with sonar world", its very cool, but there isnt anything I can find that I changed. :eek:
 
If I even play music from a web page it does the same thing. Must be Media player has an issue. I will uninstall and then reinstall.
 
Jim, I've been kind of busy working on guitar amps. I'm going to try to recreate what you've been wanting to do on my system today. Also media player in my system has gotten into pissing matches with Soundforge for supremacy.
 
OK. I just came up from the studio and I was easily able to do what you want. I took an old project and reassigned all the tracks to analog 1-2 out as you would to mix in the box. I took the lead vocal, assigned it to analog 3-4 out. I patched from analog 3-4 out to an Alesis Midiverb II and patched its outputs to analog 3-4 input. Obviously you can the create a new track and re-record that incoming signal but to monitor in real time, I went into the cuemix and set analog 3-4 to playback to analog 1-2. Works like a charm.

With reagrd to my media player issue. Even sound forge does it. This jittery, jerking sound on play back of audio. CD's or web site music. Media player, SF,and real player all do the same thing. Only Sonar plays back corectly. Also funny as know in Motu audio console, and I cant get the clock sourse to stay on "2408MK3 bank A optical as it should be. I set it, but when I close and reopen it that space is blank. The 2408MK3 rack unit itself is on ADAT bank 3 digital.
?????
