outboard gear for synth (roland)

my roland jp 8080 is way too dynamic to fit into regular band mixes.

is there a good simple eq that could help me work it in to the mix across a variety of sounds?

and i was looking at the vnc. any endorsements for live or studio sound for that unit or other low-end compressors?

Look around for a used Kawai EQ-8. I got one on Ebay for $15. They are junky for any recording work but mighty handy for dialing in a good live sound for your synths. A nicety with this unit is you can daisy-chain the EQ sections to create as many bands as you need up to a total of 8.

The way I use mine is to have 2 synths running into it with each synth getting 3 bands of EQ. The remaining two bands are patched in series with a cheap digital reverb to give it some more tonal options.

Additionally, two of the EQ bands can be switched to mic signal level which for me functions as quite a tasty color of overdrive

For my live rig I am running 2 jd-990's, jp-8080, Radias, jd-800 and Moog Voyager plugged into my own submixer just to do as you are needing. Usually it is not the 8080 that needs eq'ing though. I then run from my submixer out to a Speakeasy Vintage Classic Stereo Tube Pre then to the main bd. I find having my own submixer and tube pre I can control the sound mysef as much as possible.

my 8080 tones pretty much crush everything else if not tamed down.

a small mixer eq would be adequate, my mixer's a little big but would work in a rack.

Why not tame it down with all the powerful options in the synth engine? The envelopes, filters etc etc. give you an almost unlimited level of tone shaping power. Maybe instead of dropping cash on more gear a few hours digging into the synth or a patch editor for it can get you that tame sound you need.
