Outboard EQ

I used to own a couple PE-17's. I agree with Ford Van, they are plain Jane. Functional and very usable, but not something that really grabbed me. Between the two I'd go for the PE-15 as you are.

I also used to own an HHB Radius 20, which I thought sounded better. Nice smooth tone to that one. It's the same unit as the TLA Ivory 5013, but HHB marketed it in the USA for a while. Different paint job but otherwise the same.

Yeah, the Radius series stuff is decent for low end valve gear. Still nothing like that TLA Indigo stuff though! That stuff is killer!

Most of the Rane gear I have experience with have socketed opamps, so it should be a really easy one to modify, and make sound nicer, if you know how to use a screw driver and a pair of tweasers.

I'd consider ordering the Rane, along with a bunch of of OP-275's (from Analog Devices) and popping them in there in place of whatever comes stock. I've noticed those particular chips can take just about any plain sounding EQ and make it sound pretty smooth.

.

The PE 15 I've ordered is $100 CAN. It seems like an alright deal. I'm currently using the EQ in my Mackie board then sending the signal to 1/4 tape. I'm hoping that the PE 15 will give me some more control over the tone while tracking. Plain Jane? Should I reconsider?

Well, that sounds about good. Honestly, I'm not sure what I'm looking for... Maybe "smooth" is the word... Maybe "control"...

The PE-15 will definitely give you better control over the tone, as it is fully parametric. Bands one and five can be switched to shelving, giving you high and low shelving plus three bands in the middle. Each band can be switched in and out individually. This is a lot better than the Mackie eq, you'll be pretty happy with it I think.

It is mono, so you'll need two of them for stereo.

Mr. SonicAlbert, thanks for your input. You've been a great help. :)

I have 2 dbx 242's which I paid about $100 each for in mint condition. Good sounding 5-band EQ, with nice overlapping and for the price I just don't see what else could compare?

The PE-15s have been ordered... They're in transit. I've managed to snagg a pair for $100 CAN each. Looking forward to using them.

Thanks everyone for the advice!
