i do love smilies...
hey there.

i've been thinking about buying an outboard compressor and reverb unit (as well as an EQ later on) for a while now, to use alongside my Yamaha MG12/4, Delta 66 and Cubase.

i'd like to try and keep it under a £100 for each unit, so £200 at the most - i'm not necessarily after 'proffessional sound quality' - at the moment at least i'm in this for the fun/hobby of recording.

how easy would it be to be able to edit individual tracks with an outboard compressor unit and/or reverb unit? i'd also be interested in compressing and adding reverb to the final mixes of tracks i've recorded. does anyone do this?

so yeah, any advice would be much appreciated.

thanks,

Andy

i think the soundcard must have somekind of DST (or somehting like that, cant remeber) in so u can hook up the outboard effects. im dealing with the problem myself looking at firewire cards and not going with the soundcard route..

hhmm...

what about if i was using a mixer as well though? put the output from the soundcard into the mixer, and then use my mixers (yamaha mg 12/4) aux sends to use the eq/compressor/whatever?

i dont know if that would work or not.

suggestions please :)

thanks,

Andy

i think that would work..

u should also have a spdif in, on the delta 66, that can interface outbard units that have a spdif out.

btw,

wich units are you thinking of Andy? im looking into outboard stuff myself, cheap if possible...

verb is probably gonna be the tc m300 or lex mpx110...

outboard equalizin would be cool..im tired of doing it with the mouse :/

while we're at it..how would u rate the pres on your yamie mixer?

tanx!

also,

if u want to track with reverb, just putting the outboard units in the chain, as in:

mic - pre - verb - eq - comp - delta

will work too i think...u can use the analogue ins for that.

Generally, though, you woudl want to avoid having the verb in that chain, because once you print the input, you cannot remove the verb.

The rest often is commonly used in a chain like that.
