Hi ALL -
I'm very happy with my Sony MDR 7506 headphones. Can you recommend another comparable set of closed-ear headphones that might be less expensive? I need these for a backup pair.
Thanks!
Regards,
Andrew

For $89.00, you can't beat another pair of of 7506's. :)

I recently demoed and bought the Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs. I compared it to the Sony MDR 7506s extensively. The AT headphones are great. They have a stronger low-end response than the Sonys and have less of the "high-end hype" that the Sonys have. It took about a day to get used to the sound, because I was so familiar with the Sony crispness. However, I think that I like the sound of the ATs is more favorable for what I want to do, because it respresents the mix as it is. Don't think that I'm looking down on the Sonys. They're great headphones, but the ATs present a different spin.

Musician's Friend has the ATs on sale for $69.99. Check these out. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7...c/s=headphones/search/detail/base_pid/270553/

I have both the AT M40fs and the Sony 7506, and pretty much agree with the preceding post straight down the line.

For what that's worth.

sennheiser hd-250

i own a pair of hd 250's and they're great! very clear...good bass and blocks out external sounds well

My .02 cents worth...
AKG 240's & Sony MDR series!

I have 240 df's. not real loud, but very accurate.
not cheap though.

I can say I have had them for years with no degridation in sound that I can tell.

Yep ... the AKG 204DF is a great headphone ... but as said before, not the cheapest around. From my research on the web, they keep being touted as the most popular. Maybe I'm just a hopeless crowd-follower. But, again, I like 'em and they seem pretty darned true to the signal.

What do you plan to use these for? If you just need a pair for a guitar player or something you could get away alot less than 240's or maybe even the sonys. Keep in mind if you plan to record multiple people at a time, and you get a headphone amp without seperate bass & treble controlls per channel you may end up with problems getting a good mix out of all you phones.
Personaly I just bought a phone amp with tone controlls. that way I can use $50.00 headphones next to $150.00 ones.:)

I added a four channel headphone amp with bass and treble and the ability to switch to Mono in all phones. My main concern when using headphones is that background harmony vocalists can hear each other well enough to stay out of each other's way and to "hear it" when they get a good mix through the phones.

OK, We danced around it here and it's time to admit it.

Uhh hmmmmm

My name is Dave and I .........own a Powerplay Pro 4600:eek:

Uncontrolable sobbing..... hand me a handkerchief....

Hey Dave (aka FS) ... I've got a Powerplay Pro 4600 too ... so it's cheap ... it's sure made the players happier than what I had before (ever use a bottom-of-the-line Rollins? ... tin cans and string would be better). Maybe there's a Furman system in our future.

I LOVE my Audio Technica M40's

But sennheisers or ok too, I guess... I try and stay away from sony...

Never tried AKG, so I have no opinion there..

I think you should go out right now and get the AT's..... You'll LOVE them!

Hey deadeye:

Ya the powerplay is better than a poke in the eye. what it lacks in quality it makes up for in versatility, and it's one place I can skimp and not really affect the quality of my recordings. Ya I looked at the furman too. You'd have to spend a hell of alot to get this flexability.

:D jamming out on my new proto j's to korn. I'll go deaf yet. Now I just need to bi-amp and hook up one of my 18's for a little more kick when just jamming out:D

Yo guard, I have a couple pairs of HD280 pros, and they're the main line tracking phones here. Approx. 30db arttenuation, very comfortable to wear. All in all, I have no complaints with them, except that when a dufus rotates one cup 360 degrees trying to track with one cup, I'm afraid they die. And even then, GC replaced them free of charge. Not all GC's suck.-Richie
