Yes, OTARI JAPAN still makes the 1/4" and 1/2" 4 track, by special request and I suggest you contact them directly.

In the mean time, it may be best to EXERCISE CAUTION WHEN CONTACTING TRYCHO.COM or better yet just deal with OTARI directly.

where are the otaris!!!

Well I've just done an extensive search and I can't find any NEW 8 track otaris for sale??!!! On the Otari site they say they are making new 2 track machines but I can't see any multi tracks?! My goodness a new one inch 8 track or 1/2 inch 4 track would be delightful wouldn't it? In the meantime (showing off) my old Brenell Mini 8 track one inch is still rolling like a tank..I love it!

The OFFICIAL word from OTARI is that currently they're making the 2 track version but you can also special order the MX-5050 MKIV-4, which is a 4 track, on either 1/4" or 1/2" tape. They don't advertise this anywhere but the latter are available for order. You need to contact OTARI directly about this. The 8 track version is not available, in contrast to what I was led to believe by those skunks over at trycho.com

This is the email [edited] I received from OTARI JAPAN:

Currently we are regularly manufacturing MX-5050BIII2 1/4” 2 track 2 channels machine only. And MX-5050MK4-4 1/4” 4track 4 channel version or 1/2” 4track 4channel version is still available on request. However MX-5050MK4-8 1/2” 8track 8 channels machine is No longer available.

7.500 dollars

just got a mail from Otari Germany. The 2 track costs around 7.500 USD. Too much for a poor boy like me but when you think of how much some people spend on digital plastic crap...

I got conformation here:
From Otari directly:
"...We thank you for e-mail today, we are regularly supplying MX-5050BIII2 1/4” 2track 2channel machine only

and we can still supply 1/2” 4track 4channel or 1/4” 4track 4channel machine on request.

However I am sorry to say 1/2” 8track 8channel machine is No longer available.

Thanks and Best Regards

So, there will be no more 8-tracks from Otari.

I really have to give Otari extra special kudos for their personal touch. :D

Cheers! :)

At 7.500 USD, I'll take a dozen of 'em.

Or perhaps you meant $7500.00 USD?

Cheers! :)

Which only goes to show you that plenty of people are asking and they still have no interest in analog multitrack machines.

Yes they do but they have unrealistic expectations with regard to price.

makes me glad i bugged the hell out of them within the last couple of years. but still too much dough for me. my 8 track otari still works well though... for now.

btw... you guys know that ATR makes a 8 track tape machine? I'm sure some of you do... but for those looking for a new machine and have the money for one... the ATR-108C looks pretty nice. it can changeover from 2" to 1" to 1/2" ... not sure about the details.

here's the link:

If you you email them asking how much this baby costs, ask them when my tape is coming too! And tell 'em I'm not paying over $40 for it... ok... no more than $50.

I'd be real surprised if it were less than 30 - 40K. I'd prefer real VU meters though but the ATR-108C indeed looks like one kick ass machine, a recorder to end all recorders. :D

Hi folks, I'd like to introduce myself and also light a fire under this thread. This is my first post here on homerecording.com.

I picked up my Otari 4-track at one of those u-ship-we-sell type of eBay outlets. I can't be certain, but I believe it came from Chris and Tina Weymouth's home studio in Fairfield CT. $300 took it and I bought it on the spot and took it home. It's in perfect condition and fully restored, although its missing its side panels--- which is fine with me because I can access the internal speed switch by simply reaching in with my hand.

The machine maintains perfect speed and sounds fantastic. It's currently belting out a recording from vinyl, 'Roxanne' by the police with the fantastic Analog dynamics all of us with good machines and good tape know.

Let me tell you guys (and gals) there is no need to go out and spend 7 grand on a new machine. Just find one that's properly aligned and well taken care of. It will take you into the next century with a grin as wide as a trailer.

I really lucked out with this machine. You could too.
