I am going to try ORTF with 2 cardioids for drum overheads, and was wondering what luck anyone has had with this method, and how well it gets along with the close mics.
My main technique has been the two stick method, and it great, but I'm getting bored and wanna try neater, weirder stuff.
Plus, having the little bar is cool. :)
Peace.

PS... I'll be using an AKG451b and a soundelux U195 as my pair since my second 451 has not materialized as I expected. I think I'll be ok with it, whats your thoughts? I'll be using this same pair with the 2 stick method today, and kinda worry about the difference in the two mics, but whats a smeller to do? Oh well...

Using different mics for ORTF is not going to work quite right, particularly with one LD and one SD. Using two SD which are different models would be better, or two LD, in all likely.

Do you have a bi-directional mic? If so you could try an MS pair, which does not require identical mic.

I find ORTF overheads work pretty well but need to be pretty close to the drummers head position. The beauty of this for me is less clutter to impede the drummer. I just stick a pair slightly behind and above his head position. I usually get much less toms this way though. Without a very good room, I don't think you get away with doing this without individully micing the toms.
