I just got a great deal on a pair of near mint original Yamaha NS10s. I was looking for the "Studio" version, but the deal on this pair was just too good to pass up, considering the condition they're in. So my question is, can I place them horizontally, even though they're made for vertical orientation?

Eh, they're probably still going to sound like NS10's...

Try it. I can't remember if they reoriented anything for the "studio" models.

That said, I hated them to death from day one. They did make a decent "little crappy set" but don't expect them to actually sound "nice" or anything... Putting them on their sides shouldn't make enough of a difference in the case of such a speaker considering the expectations from it.

Geez, I really sound harsh on those things, don't I... I really don't mean to.

[EDIT]

If it makes a difference (it will), the NS10's were one of VERY few models of NF's that I preferred the tweeters to the "extended field" outside, rather than the "more accurate" inside. Some of that was because the tweeters reminded me of my ex-fiance' screaming in my ear, but the imaging, for some odd reason, actually seemed more "natural" with the tweets out.

Well, yeah, they're kinda supposed to sound like shit; the idea being that if you can make a mix sound decent there, it'll sound good just about anywhere. Eventually I wanna go even shittier for my "little crappy set" and get a pair of Auratone 5Cs :)

I'll try it eventually. I'm not able to really use them right now, as I'm still working on the room. I'm going slow and buying only tried and true gear so that I don't have to buy anything twice, although these speakers are one of the last things I needed. I'm interested in standard de facto gear wherever possible, like how just about every movie from the 60s to the 90s was recorded on a Nagra tape recorder, or how just about every radio station has an EV RE20. I find it hard to trust new products, and I figure if it was good enough for all these great albums, it'll be good enough for me.

You can have the orientation any way you want, it's just that on the later models the badging was the other way up, read the NS10 story. The M version had a different tweeter which was not as bright, but I have the older model and have been using them for over 20 years without a problem and have them standing upright not laying down as I prefer them this way and I have the hight correct so the tweeter is level with my ear.

Alan.
