So i tried some marshall amps and i am not going to lie...i didn't like most of them at all. I wanted that metal or hard rock sound, but at the same time i want that classic brit rock or that floyd sound if i wanted it...i was looking at an orange or a mesa amp...whats your opinion?

wait it's me again....is it easy to make your own amp?

Check out vht amps - I have the Pittbull 45 combo - it's a stellar amp for a hard rock sound!

for heavy metal sound, i'd go with the Bogner Uberschall. can't go wrong there!

How much do you play out. That would effect my decision. Oranges eat tubes and Mesas run forever. Look at an old Traynor YB1 or a Laney. You may just need a very nice stomp box to push it over the edge. The metal and Brit rock combo is kinda weird, you may not find it in that amp. Oranges are beautiful though but I've owned a Mesa F100 and toured fairly heavily with it and it's indestructable, two channel with a wide range of warm tone and a distortion that rips through you. AH!! I forgot to ask what guitar you're playing, amps sound different with different guitars (I'm a les paul special/p90 sorta guy so take all of this with that grain of salt).

best,
scott

I think you'd do best with a good programmable preamp, like a Marshall JMP-1 or ADA MP-1 (or a Mesa Triaxis, if you want to spend that much) into an amp with big clean headroom, like a Twin, or similar. metal and Floyd are very hard to get from the same amp.

You'd really be suprised with some of the tones you can get out of Egnaters. Especially the TOL 50's these babies sing if you an get your hands on em.. a boutique amp at a nice price and they are built like tanks... I managed to find one in the used section at GC they let it go for a trade with a Epi Gold top and a Hatke 200 bass head... I got to clean my closet and get a free amp ah wow... :D

My Mesa is currently for sale so that I can get an Orange.

An orange amp is defenitley an expensive, britsh voiced amp. A mesa boogie (except for the Stiletto I believe) are very american voiced. They are different animals. Someone suggested a programmable preamp, but I have to reccomend one better IMO. The Randall RM series. They come with preamp modules that you can swap in and out of the amp (with the amp holding 2-4 at a time depending on the model) They have like 14 different preamp models ranging from fender to marshall to vox to boogie and more. It has great reviews, and won't cost you more than a boogie or orange either.

I was going to go off on a rant against modeling amps, but I've heard about this Randall series. My amp tech (Dave Lancaster) who is Mr. Tube/point to point says it's actually pretty alright. It's notan orange or Mesa, but it's versatile and high quality. It's definitely worth checking out if you're looking for versatility.

No they're not. Boogie Mk IV.

Buy a Boogie and live happily ever after.

Sure, all you need is a degree in EE. Or, alternatively, the will to lose your life.
