Hip Hop Head
I recently bought a Echo Layla 3G and I want to know if there are any other options for monitoring?

I currently have my monitors directly connected to the analog 1&2 outs.

I record vocals in the same room I monitor from, so I'm looking for a better way to route a headphone mix.

Using the headphone out isnt an option because when I mute the 1&2 outs for the monitors, I loose the headphone signal as well.

Can I output from 1&2 and 3&4 at the same time? I can't figure this out.

I thought about using "Y" splitters but I'm still going to have a issue when muting the monitors...

I really don't want to spend $400 on a Presonus Cental Station...

What can I do?

There are many other devices like the central station for much less. Im using a Samson C-Control with my layla. I payed $50 for it on ebay and it works great. Behringer makes one for like $30 or so and SM Pro Audio has 3 different ones ranging in price. The one I have lets me control two sets of monitors as well as having a headphone out and a talkback feature.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these? I am aware of a few of them but I dont want anything thats going to color the sound.

Do any of them have passive outs/through for monitors?

My mixing rack has a centralstation. They claim its passive, but they must tap somewhere to instruct the meters

To me it sounds pretty damn clear! Certainly as good as any console centersection to me

When i was using the layla 3g i had the monitors plugged into outputs 3&4. That way in sonar i could send the master to 3&4 for the monitors and set it to 1&2 for the headphones. Not sure if thats what you're looking for but it's how i ended up having to do it.

Take care

Can you give me a little more details about how you did this?

I'm not sure how to do that...

How do you get sound out of both outputs? Did you have to put a bus on each channel?

If i remember right the layla headphone out was basically hardwired to outputs 1&2 so i ended up using the 3&4 outs on the back of the layla 3g for the monitors. In sonar (not sure if you use sonar) the master fader would be set to 3&4 out for the monitors. If i didn't need a submix i'd just simply switch it to 1&2 and the headphones would be active but the monitors silent. If i needed a submix i'd create a send track and send everything one track at a time to that, set up level and just have the output routed to 1&2 instead of the master fader so i could mute the master and do it that way. I"m not sure if this is any help at all but I am almost certain you should be able to do this without having to buy any additional gear.

Ok thanks....

Thats the only way I could figure out how to do it.

I too use Sonar, and I was hoping to find another way other then running busses from every track. My console view is busy enough as is.

Yeah, I remember being frusterated with that as well. Sorry i couldn't help man.
