Im pretty new to all this stuff and I have been recording drums the past couple of weeks mucking round with different mic placements, (due to lack to funds i am only using a vocal mic on the bass drum and an audio-technica 2020 for a room mic.) I have found the best sound i can get is with the 2020 about 4M in front of the drums level with the top of the bass drum.

Anyone else used this kind of setup and have a better suggestion?

Nope no other suggestions for the microphone placement.
You did the right thing and mucked around with different placements till you found the best possible place with minimal equipment.

Good for you. You did much better than most of the new people around here and only asks questions. Then still can't get it right.

My hat is off to you JerryJerry. :thumbs up:

I would tend to use the vocal mic on the kick and use the 2020 as an overhead, about 1 mtr (3') above the centre of the kit, or maybe above the snare depending on what sounds best. Another thing you could try is to use the 2020 out front of the kit (you need to experiment with distance) but slightly higher then a kick mic, maybe wast high, and use the vocal mic as an overhead? In both cases you need to check if one of the mics needs the phase reversed.

A lot of the sound quality is going to depend on the kit, room, tuning and player.

Alan.
